which big wheels for 68
Hi,
I just bought a 68 fastback and want to put the biggest classic tires possible on Torque thrust D's.
It seems that the biggest Torque thrust D's available are 15 X7
and I am interested in the Firehawk Indy 500 tires, as I've been told they are better tires than the BF Goodrich's
is there a way to go bigger with these kind of wheels?
What are the proper tires to get?
Is it advantageous to go bigger on the rear?

I had a pair of Weld Rodlites in a 15x8 witha 4 1/2 inch backspacing on a 68 fastback. The tire size was 255/60/15.They fit perfect on the rear. The backspacing allowed this for a perfect fit.The leaf springs were aged and sagging(we took care of that later). We used a 14x6 on the front,I can't remeber the tire size though.
For a larger wheel I sold Trevor Price a set of 05+ Bullitts for his 68'Shelby.They fit with the use of some spacers. It took several different tries with different spacer applications but they look awesome and have had no problems laying down the torque the 428CJ produces. The Bullitts look like they were made for that Mustang. They also cleared his larger disc brake set-up.
I would stick with a 15x7 (w/235/60/15 ties size)Torque Thrust due to the fact the backspacing is 4" and would fit without any modifications.Use a skinny up front. You can get into some problems with larger tires due a larger overall diameter. You can special order the Torque Thrust in a different backspacing but it take a while for delivery. This model is the only one I know of that you can get the special order backspacing.

Wow, thanks for the info...
I guess I will go for Torque thrust D's all around in 15 X7
and I'm thinking of these tires
Firestone firehawk Indy 500's
235/60/15 rear
215/65/15 front..
I'm going for these tires as Tire rack seems to rate them much higher than the BF Goodrich radials
Will that work? and will that have a relatively 'beefy' look?

Keep in mind that Tire Rack's rating system is based off consumers feedback and often the feedback comes from people who couldn't tell you the difference between a Mustang GT and a base V6 from driving it so take that feedback with a grain of salt. I've read some feedback from people that shouldn't even be let near a computer let alone rate a tire's performance.
I'm in the auto business and have a LOT of tire experience....I think Firestone tires are "OK" but not great. BFG I find to be a great tire for the most part...some are better than others but you have to decide what you want from a tire and your useage before settling on a particular design. I've also used the Dunlop GT Qualifiers and been pretty happy with those. Other than that there isn't much out there in a white letter tire...if you don't want white letters than your options open up even more.

I use Dunlop GT qualifiers...they are great! I got them because it seemed averyone had BFGs, and I wanted to be different, but I will do BFGs next time, becuase they come in so many different sizes. Between the time I got my first dunlops and needed more, they discontinued my size, so I ended up getting a taller tire for the rear...which is not what i wanted to do, but it looks good anyway. Since I had to change sizes, I figured I could go wider as well, but they didnt make the size!!!
