69 Mach 1 Rat Rod
69 Mach 1 Rat Rod
Hey guys,
My friend and I just finished up a beautiful 1969 Mustang Mach 1 restoration with a 428 Cobra Jet in Lime Gold Metallic. Waiting for the 1st nice day to take it out for a ride and photo shoot.
But we have found ourselves with a surplus of parts, engines, transmissions, and even a car. I'm kicking around the idea of rat rodding this other 69 Mustang so I will have something to drive that I won't have to baby (unlike my 06, which I'm so scared will get a ding)...even though I probably will end up babying it.
Problem is, I can't seem to picture what a flat black 69 Mach 1 would look like. Does anyone happen to have some pictures? Or should I just shell out the extra dough and paint it white myself?
Plan is, all go, no show streetfighter. Maybe mini-tubs. Of course, all the rust will be fixed and everything will be panted and fixed for a future touch up and paint.

I've seen a ton of flat black cars (Camaros, Chevelles, Torinos etc.). While they look badass, they still have the "unfinished" vibe going on. My vote is for Wimbleton white. But if you go flat black, go with a quality product and not the rattle can stuff.

That flat black 69 posted earlier looks evil, but I'm going to have to agree with the unfinished comment. Plus flat black tends to get chalky in the sun, right?
I'm torn. I think we ould probably o white just as easily for perhaps only slightly more cost. What's another grand for something you love?
But I actually noticed something that may be a good compromise, it's called "Satin Black." It's a flat black with a slight shine. It isa one stage paint job and comes in at a kit for about 600 bucks. Not bad.
If you type satin black paint job in google you get some mean lookin Audis and BMWs, as well as some mean lookin classics (no older Mustangs though, ugh). What do you guys think of that?

In any event, do what makes you happy and you'll be happier in the long run.

For the short run I want to get all the metal fixed and get a nice jump on the bodywork (again, not perfect like the 69 we just finished). I want to have a fun play car with not alot of money sunk into it (yeah right, like that ever happens). I would rather buy a rack and pinion kit than dump money into paint at this point, plus to save money, I will be painting it myself instead of paying to have my friend professionally paint it (he has a warehouse of classic Fords you would die for, all redone).
I just don't see the point in investing in an expensive paint job when I want to go back and make it flawless later, hence flat black and satin black. However, white could work too. I think white would probably look best, but it may show quick bodywork. To do satin black right you really need a 2 stage paint, not the cheap 1 stage paint that's 600 bucks. Flat black is like the ultimate paint for cars that are all go and no show, but the oils and rain would ruin it and it tends to get chalky.
Long story short, I am interested in any cheap paint job that I can do myself and hide not the greatest body work (I want it done quick, not in 3 years).
Suggestions?
