Ive been actively searching for a classic coupe with minimal rust to work on for the next couple years while at the same time be able to drive regularly. This coupe caught my attention at a local business.

My main concern is these rust 'dots' all along the hood and trunk. I snapped a couple pics so you can see what i mean. I would plan on repainting it anyway to deal with the small rust spots around the wheel wells but these other spots worry me. Is this normal?

Also, can anyone identify if this is a GT or not? I havent found out what code the engine is but i know it is a 289. What are the tell-tale signs of a GT?

Whats the asking price?

Looks like the usual rear qtr rust, I cant see the pinpoints you speak of in the pics, so cant comment there. Personally, rust is a price/effort trade-off proposition until you get to bad framerails, at which point I always bail out unless the car is exceptionally rare. Lower 1/4 rust is common and fairly easily repaired. The cowl, however, is a different story altogether. Dont buy without checking the cowl!

This is a long-winded way of saying Id have to know the price before I can give you my opinion

RE: GT, by '67 it was an option package, not a model, so the VIN wont really tell you anything, and correspondingly the GT option isnt as valuable in 67 as it would be, say, on a 65. The C-Code was the least engine avail with the GT package....youd about have to run the Marti report to see if the options were added later or not.

LMan, thanks for the info. The asking price is $7000 which is wayyyy high (but im not surprised since it's not a very respectable place, i wouldnt offer them more than 4000 from what ive seen.) The cowl and framerails seemed fine from what i saw, the hood and trunk have pencil-point dots of rust all over them. ill try to zoom in the photos so they are more visible. right now im thinking the dots would come out with a good wash as well as stripping of the paint.

Im hoping the engine is the A-code for the sake of the 4valve, the interior is very nice with only one tear that i could see.

Ill let ya know what else i can find out.

Yes, 7k is much too much, even in no-rust shape, which that doesnt appear to be. If you get this far, pour a container of water into the cowl vent and see if any comes out onto the floorboards inside. This will help tell you what shape the cowl is in. Cowl repairs are expensive and time-consuming.

What do you mean by 4-valve? The "A" code denotes a 4-barrel 289 engine, not 4 valves. They all had 2 valves per cylinder.

Excellent advice.
Not only costly, but hard to find a craftman to repair it right.

LMan, typo on my part, i meant 4-barrel. i will probably take it for a test drive and see how it runs and maybe make them an offer, though it wont be very high.

here are some zoom-in's on the rust spots:

im thinking maybe they painted over some rust or something, but these spots seem pretty minor, anyone seen spots like that. they are all over the hood and most of the back end of the car.

I would hazard to guess its old air or impurities from a poor paint job that have 'popped' and flash-rusted....but thats just a SWAG.

IMO, you should "runaway, not "crawlaway". (Sorry, couldn't resist ). I see the value at about 1/2 of the asking price. The freckles could very well indicate bigger problems. I'd tend to think the car has some surface rust issues underneath the paint, and will require complete stripping and repaint.

As others mentioned, if you decide to pursue this one, check the cowl, as well as torque box and framerails.

gt350, thats what i was thinking as far as the price goes, i would never offer them higher than half the asking. i am prepared to do a complete stripping/repainting but not if it only reveals bigger problems.

I think you should probably keep searching. With the signs I see from the pics so far, it would seem that cowl rust is a good bet, and I wonder what that nice shiny Vinyl top is hiding. Something tells me there is likely quite a bit of rust eating away under there. Definately looks to be a rescue-able project, but certainly not a small one.

Good luck either way.
