6 cylinder stang question
6 cylinder stang question
I may buy a 6 cylinder stang and the guy said that the carburetor isn't letting enough gas through and it may be leaking. Is this just a simple fix? Take carb out and buy a new one? Or is there more to it?
Thanks!
Thanks!
One friend of mine took one apart and said he had, no lie, *4* tables of parts in that thing.
I just bought mine to replace the bad one, as it sounded horrendous to rebuild. Looks like rebuilt ones are about 150-200 googlin' about. I searched for "Ford 200 Carburetor 1967", as most parts catalogs don't go back to 1966 or earlier. That showed up with one for $187. But that's Rock Auto doing it as a send it in and they'll rebuild it for you. A new one is going to be... well.. perhaps unobtainable, and certainly expensive.
Now? I would probably tackle it. I can rebuild V-twin synched motorcycle ones, surely the 1 barrel on the six isn't that bad... Didn't have the internet with it's youtubes and webpages and such. I was the skeert of screwin' it up. I ain' skeert naw moor.

As far as taking the old one out and putting the new one in, yes, it's relatively "that simple." You take off the lines/fittings for the gas, the linkage for the accelerator, and seems like it's just two nuts or bolts and the thing comes off the intake. Reverse the procedure, then do the adjustments *by the freakin' book*, and you'll have a good result.
This means, by the way, get a book. Namely a shop manual. You'll want that. Or a reliable, accurate web page that tells you what 'by the book' is.
I would also be replacing the air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, and points. And perhaps the fuel pump too. Because all of that is going to make a difference as to whether the thing runs right or not. Guessing isn't a grand idea, IMO.
Good luck!

//I really ought to get another project car like that... but my PC800 keeps me busy enough.

Pony Carbs is out of business I think but this months Mustang Monthly has the name of a former employee who is carrying the torch. For 65-67 if you still have original distributor you must have a carb with a spark control valve on the side. I got fooled once by a later 1100 that did not have the valve. Timing will always be too far advanced. Read the article in MM. You could rebuild it yourself if you are patient and careful.
Rebuilding a single barrel carb is not difficult if you take your time. Rebuild kits are still around. Or if you really want to spend money, check with Clifford Performance in Corona, Ca. They specialize in I-6 performance products and could probably assist you in finding a nice set up. They make headers for the I-6 as well.
another I-6 mustang Florida
