The previous owner of my '66 'vert put in a 4sp Hurst transmission.
Due to lack on technical knowledge and vocabulary, the Hurst has three rods that hang down under the vehicle. They are suppose to stay together. However, mine keep getting out-of-sinc. When it gets out of sinc, I can not take the vehicle out of gear (I am usually stuck in first gear). Therefore, I have to crawl under the vehicle to "knock" the rods back into line.
I have tried spraying white lightening (? -- I think that is the name of the grease), but it does not help. A local mechanic has suggesting welding the rods together. He states that there is no real reason for these three rods to not be together.
Does anyone have any experience with a Hurst transmission? Is the above suggestion my best course of action?
Thanks

A couple ideas come to mind...
You shifter may simply need adjusted ($free). It may have some wrong or missing parts. It may need a bushing rebuild set ($10).
The three rods move independently of each other. 1 works the 1-2 shift lever on the transmission, one works the 3-4 lever, and the other works the reverse lever. RUN QUICKLY away from that "mechanic" that suggested welding them together...
Here's a nice article on shiffter installation (yeah it's a chevy, but same concept)
