4.0 v6 in a 67-69

Hi, I'm new to the first generation. It's come to my attention that I might be able to get my hands on a 67-68 or a 69 body with everything minus the engine and transmission. Right now I'm driving an 06 v6 with a few mods. I was wondering if this swap would be easy. I mean I've read on people dropping the 4.6 cobra engines in those. Since the 4.0 is a smaller engine, do you think I'd be able to drop my engine and transmission in pretty easily? I mean the computer and all the wiring seems easy enough you know. I think the only issues to come up is if everything fit in there perfectly. I'd mostly be wanting the 69 since it's a fastback if that helps.

Do you want to do the 4.0 that you currently have, or another 4.0, just because you are familiar with it? If you weren't planning to use the one you currently own, I would strongly suggest the newer 3.7 V6, it puts out 305 hp!! That's what I am going to install in my '78 Mustang II

I would think an old mostly or complete block/tranny wouldn't be too hard to find - and it would most likely plop right in.

I wish I could find this old commercial... There are two mechanics smashing a battery with a mallet into the engine bay. The customer asks is they're sure it will fit. One responds, "Trust us, we've been doing this for years." - Flashback to when they were little kids - there's a square peg, splintered and mushroomed halfway in a round hole. One says, "See, it will fit; you just have to keep hitting it."

I've seen a 460 dropped in a Maverick - Sky's the limit!

yeah i'd use my current v6. the thing is though that i've seen people have to delete the shock towers and take off the crossmember. I just hope the crossmember would let it sit perfectly.

I don't think you should. I mean you could, but why? You definateky can find and original engine and tranny and build them a bit. You would get was more HP...

Better off just using a 302 or 351W, less work and more performance.

This. Just keep the v6 for your DD and work on the other when you can!

see, don't get me wrong. I do want a v8. but I like my engine. I like injection, and I like my transmission. The thing is, I might be able to get my hands on a body, with all the suspension, wheels, tires, interior. I realize now it's asking for a lot but I was pretty happy knowing I could get the body. I'd rather drive a 60s mustang than a current. They're way cooler. The key is drop my engine and transmission and electronics in for the least amount of hassle (I know that's probably impossible). I do know putting an original engine is probably the least amount of hassle, but the goal is to not have to spend much buying the engine, building it and dropping it in. And honestly I'd prefer my engine to an old one. Sounds odd, I know. I just want to know, would it be too complicated or a big hassle to drop a smaller 4.0 v6 into preferably a 69? or am I better off just not buying that car and staying with mine? Yes I could just sell my car and buy a fixed up 60s mustang, but I like my motor, its reliability, injection, it's electronic, and buying one with a modern motor would probably be more expensive. The question isn't whether you would, but whether it'd be easier than putting a a 4.6 that's bigger.
sorry if that sounds like I'm being a jerk, but really I'm just trying to clarify. and I would be using it as a daily driver.

because my motor is already owned by me. of course there are better options, but I want a modern engine in the car. I have the motor, tranny, and all the electronic stuff. it just seems easy. idk plus I love the current exhaust set up. I know it'll sound different but hopefully not too different.

I also wouldn't personally daily a classic, I did it for 4 years and just sold mine to get a newer mustang. I don't miss my old one at all, the new mustang is better in every area.

Thing is you'd have to pay a shop to custom make your engine mounts, transmission mounts, driveshaft, all electrical, then you have to get new gauges, and probably modify the pedals to work with the system. After all of that if the engine doesn't fit you have to get a mustang 2 front setup which is $2000+.

So this route would be anywhere from 4-6k of not more in my mind.

On the other side you can search Craigslist and buy a v8 and transmission for under $1000 and it drops right it and there is minimal wiring, unless you go fuel injected.

This could go from 500-2000 depending on what you do.

Maybe you want to put in a motor from a 80's Mustang? Then you get injection, computer, etc. And there are kits out there for that.....
