I have a 66 coupe with the stock 289. Have never had an issue with it, ran great until a couple days ago it started stalling on acceleration (when cruising), sputtering and even cutting off after it has been driven for a little while. Sounded like a bad fuel pump/filter issue so I replaced both but is still happening. Could it be the carb? Any ideas on where to look next would be helpful.

 

Sorry, should add that it is an automatic as well.

 

if you still have the original ignition you may try a new condensor and make sure the points are opening .. then go to the coil ..

 

I had the car tuned up a couple of months ago with new plugs, wires, etc. And have also put a new coil on since then as well.

 

still check the points setting then go to the carb accelerator pump ..

 

Yeah I've had my 4.9 stutter on acceleration. It would reboud pretty quick, but the accelerator pump wasn't spraying so there was always a momentary lag.

 

Just found a pretty good crimp in the fuel line, don't know how it got there but gonna try replacing that and see if that helps.

 

That's a good thing to do. However, since a carb has a reservoir (float bowl), that would only affect the refill time, right? Not the immediate lag when you hit the peddle.

 

Timing?

I used to have a problem where if i was at a standstill and floored it... it would immediately die. I advanced the timing a little and it went away.
