Hi guys, I'm new to mustangs and could use a bit of advice. I'm ready to put some work into my dad's old 1970 mach 1. I'm having trouble identifying the heads on the 351c as I can't find a casting code on them. All I can see is the date code 9h19 as that it's a 4v head. Any ideas on what I've got here? Pictures attached Thanks a lot.

 

I dont think there are any other casting numbers.
Just date codes.
On another note in your picture it looks like the lifter bosses in the block are cracked!
Is that the case or just a shadow in the picture?

 

if the engine is original to the car you will have a good set of the closed chamber heads .. i`m not sure when they switched to the open chamber style to lessen compression ..1972 i think .. they should have a casting date like a D0 something meaning 1970 .. D1 would be 1971 etc ..you have one of the best engines ford ever made .. they just made them too late and too few of them .. imagine if Carroll Shelby had a 351C to play with in his cobras or 65 Shelbys ..

 

I think that's just the picture I accidentally used the hdr function.

A bit more background on the engine. In 1980 my father had the engine balanced, blueprinted and had the compression ratio dropped from 12:1 (stock I think) to 9:1 as his plan was to go twin turbo. The engine never made it back into the car. My father has since passed away and the car is mine to fix up. I dont think I want to go turbo as I already have a turbo datsun. I was hoping that 351c could be built up for around 450-500hp range. But first I need to figure out what I'm working with.

 

Here's something that looks troubling. Seems to be a hole in the engine block up front near the lifter bosses. Looks like it was almost drilled open!?

 

one allows oil to drain back into the oil pan .. the other allows oil to splash into the timing chain area ..it looks like your dad did not run the engine .. i guess you dont know what kind of cam is in there .. take it all back apart and start from scratch .. find a hotrod article on how to build a 500 horse cleveland .. it will not take much .....
