Incredibly rare and truly special, it isn’t every day that we see more than one SAAC Fox Body Mustang under one roof.

These days, the Fox Body Mustang has become a rather sought-after entity, mostly thanks to the fact that many of us grew up either owning or wishing we owned one, and now, we’re in a position to do so – or own one again. For many of us, these cars are ones that we idolized growing up, and having one now is like reliving a piece of that treasured youth. But while this generation of Ford’s legendary pony car is still a common sight these days, one thing we rarely see are SAAC Fox Body Mustang models, which is what made this particular gathering of them at Ponies in the Smokies so darn impressive.

The folks at the FoxBodyFX YouTube channel were in attendance to capture this special moment on film, and it’s well worth the watch for those that have long coveted the SAAC Fox Body Mustang. Somewhat of a precursor to the return of the Shelby Mustang, these cars were built in extremely small quantities – just 62, in fact – and were created by their namesake, the Shelby American Automobile Club. Sporting an array of performance and visual upgrades, the SAAC Mustang wasn’t cheap, either, with a price tag of around $40k.

Thus, the fact that five SAAC Mustangs showed up at Ponies in the Smokies is pretty incredible, and this group consists of several different kinds of examples as well, including a mixture of MK1s and MK2s, along with a SAAC Snake. One of the owners notes that his father was one of the founding members of SAAC, and reveals that the club wanted something more modern they could drive around in as an alternative to their prized, ultra-valuable vintage rides, which is precisely why this model was born.

In partnership with Ford and with advice from Carroll Shelby himself, the SAAC Mustang came to life in a variety of forms, with some even fitted with superchargers from the get-go. Many members wound up tracking their cars and using them precisely as intended, which means that some of them were later found in a pretty sad state of disrepair.

This particular group of folks is committed to finding and saving SAAC Mustangs, however, and thus far, they’ve done a heck of a job at that. However, there are undoubtedly more SAAC Fox Body Mustang examples out there waiting to be discovered and/or saved, and if you can find one, it’s a truly rare and amazingly cool conversation piece that’s guaranteed to attract attention at pony car-centered shows like this one.
