Clean 1988 Ford Mustang GT is something the owner has wanted for a very long time, and now, he’s making it better than new.

Many of us grew up in what some like to call the “modern era” of automobiles, spanning the 1980s and 1990s to the present day. As such, while our parents were raised on true classics like the first-gen Mustang, we have a fondness for models like the Fox Body, which we grew up idolizing or perhaps even buying and driving to school in many cases. That’s also true of Mustang Source member DudeStang, who purchased this 1988 Ford Mustang GT back in early 2020 and has been documenting its build process in this thread ever since.

“I’ve wanted a Fox Body for a long time,” he notes. “The first Mustang I ever rode in was a Fox Body. The first Mustang I ever drove was a Fox Body. I’ve been a huge fan of these cars since I was a teenager and always wanted to own one. I also wanted a project car that I could tinker with and build up and mod and learn on. I’ve been making time for that experience whenever I have had free weekends over the past two months. It’s definitely a work in progress, but it’s been fun and a learning experience.”

The idea here is to build a restomod of sorts, a car that’s equally capable of cruising on the weekends and hitting the track on occasion. Of course, with a car of this age, there’s also a bunch of routine maintenance and cosmetic fixes that need to be completed, too. Piece by piece, that’s precisely what DudeStang has done over the past three years, tackling one little project after another and documenting the entire process in the forums, as well as on his YouTube channel.

Eventually, he got around to the fun stuff – adding upgrades including fresh shocks and sway bar links, a Cervini’s ram air kit, and new upper control arms, in addition to more mundane tasks like cleaning out the gas tank. Other upgrades include an SVE short throw shifter, pony wheels, a new bumper cover, a double-DIN touchscreen, Flowmaster exhaust, 4.10 gears, and 31-spline axles. Thus far, it’s been a long and winding road, but we’ve enjoyed watching this 1988 Ford Mustang GT come together over the past few years. So be sure and head over here to catch up with what’s already been done to this Fox Body, and stay tuned for future updates!
