Coffee and Cars Houston Mustang Ban

Following a temporary ban last November, Coffee and Cars organizers have decided to ban Mustangs, Camaros, Chargers, and Challengers for good.

As Mustang fans are well aware by now, our beloved pony car has developed a bit of a reputation in recent years – and it isn’t necessarily a good one. While we’d argue that the vast majority of Mustang owners love their cars and know how to drive them, there are always going to be a small select group of folks that don’t – and many of them wind up doing stupid things, trying to show off for crowds, oftentimes with disastrous results. That has prompted a small number of organizers to at least consider banning modern muscle cars like Mustangs, Camaros, and Chargers/Challengers, but Coffee and Cars out of Houston, Texas has now made that move official.

If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Coffee and Cars issued what was expected to be a temporary ban on modern muscle cars back in November 2023, a move that came after one gathering where a number of cars reportedly broke the rules by revving their engines and performing burnouts. That decision, as one would expect, prompted a strong response from car fans in general, with most calling for specific individuals that engage in this kind of behavior to be banned – not everyone that owns a certain type of car.

In all fairness, there are a few events that have been shut down completely for such unruly behavior, which is obviously dangerous and could potentially injure others – or worse. This is precisely why there’s been such a crackdown on people who do burnouts or even engage in street racing at cars and coffee type events, because a handful of bad eggs can simply ruin these types of enjoyable activities for everyone.

As one might imagine, the reactions to this permanent ban are strong ones, with the vast majority expressing angst toward Coffee and Cars organizers for their decision. Those same organizers plan to move to an invitation-only format, though it is worth noting that owners of classic Mustangs will still be allowed to attend – however, Coffee and Cars hasn’t said what model years they’ll allow, and stopped short of giving any more specifics.

While it’s understandable that Coffee and Cars organizers don’t want to see their event get shut down by police for becoming some sort of public nuisance, it’s also surprising that they don’t reach out to law enforcement for help or simply ban those that engage in this type of behavior – after all, we can’t imagine that most modern muscle car owners do. Regardless, this is their decision to make, though we imagine that it won’t only hurt attendance at Coffee and Cars, but also, there are likely plenty of other, similar events around Houston that will welcome the same folks that are no longer allowed there.
