Incredible 210,000 Mile GT500 Puts Down Big Dyno Numbers

You might expect a high mileage ’08 Shelby GT500 to be down on power, but buckle up for the surprise of your life.

We’ve known for decades that the Ford Mustang offers a great balance of performance and daily drivability. However, this video from famous YouTuber Tyler Hoover really drives that point home.

The S197 Shleby GT500 was a revelation when it was released in 2007. It was meant as a follow-up to the legendary 2003-2004 SVT Cobra. As sequels go, it was a damn good one. Powered by a supercharged 5.4 liter Modular V8, the GT500 was rated at 500 horsepower and 480 lb/ft of torque.

Often overlooked, though, are the various quality-of-life improvements found throughout the S197 compared to the outgoing New Edge. As much as we love the SN95/New Edge Mustangs, it’s no secret that they were soldiering on with outdated Fox-platform underpinnings well past their expiration date.

As a result, the S197 Shelby GT500 was actually a much more civilized car to drive, despite the additional power and performance. Don’t believe us? Someone put over 200,000 miles on one.

High Mileage, High Performance

Hoovies Garage on YouTube recently released this video, in which they purchased the cheapest GT500 for sale in the country with an unbelievable 210,000 miles on the odometer. The price? Just $14,000.

Since the car came from California, there’s really no rust to speak of. The composite headlights are filled with condensation. That’s a common issue with any car of this era that spent time outside. There’s also some slight bubbling on the paint on the hood. That’s about the extent of the exterior wear and tear.

Under the hood, we find an upgraded VMP supercharger, which, according to our host, should be good for another 100-150 horsepower. The next logical step is to strap this thing to the dyno and find out how many ponies have escaped in the last 210,000 miles.

With the stock exhaust, the blower whine is deafening. The results were a shock –  573 horsepower and 535 torque to the wheels. Given that these cars put down about 435 horsepower to the wheels in stock form, we can safely assume that this Shelby hasn’t lost much power at all, if any, in the last 200,000 miles.

The takeaway? Get out and drive your car as much as you can – your Mustang can handle it no problem!
