Classic Recreations managed to build a better 1969 Mustang Boss 429, and this one proves that you can teach an old dog new tricks.

Back in 2018, Classic Recreations – which has churned out all kinds of cool Blue Oval builds over the years – unveiled its latest and perhaps greatest machine to date – a modernized 1969 Mustang Boss 429 tribute. The company acquired the rights from Ford to build and sell brand new versions of this rather rare and iconic pony car, one built in scant quantities for NASCAR homologation purposes, which means that acquiring one today will set you back some serious coin. But while the original is an impressive performer even by today’s standards, the Classic Recreations redo of the 1969 Mustang Boss 429 is even more so, as YouTuber Parker Nirenstein of Vehicle Virgins recently discovered.

To create this tribute car, CR takes an original 1969 Mustang body and gives it the legendary Boss 429 hood, logos, and some fancier wheels. In this case, the car has been completely blacked-out for a more modern, sinister appearance, and fitted with a set of 18-inch VF529 American Racing wheels wrapped with 225/40/18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires up front and 315/30/18 rubber in the rear.

The interior features the same sort of tasteful upgrades in the form of new seats, 200 mph gauges, air conditioning, a custom console, an and an aluminum steering wheel – nothing too outlandish that would diminish from how great these cars are in stock form. Of course, the real story here are the modern mechanicals this tribute contains, which is what really matters.

That starts under the hood with a massive 546 cubic-inch V8 churning out an astounding 815 horsepower, which was mated to either a Tremec six-speed manual or automatic transmission – in this case, it’s packing the former option, fitted with a Centerforce clutch for maximum fun. To help it get that power to the ground, Classic Recreations has also added tubular control arms, oversized anti-roll bars, adjustable coilovers, a four-link rear suspension, and Wilwood disc brakes.

Originally, these cars weren’t cheap, with a price tag north of $200k, but this particular example cost a whopping $460k to acquire. Regardless, as Nirenstein finds out during a test drive, it seems to be worth every penny, as the classic muscle car drives and performs more like a modern supercar. It also just so happens to be up for auction at PocketList, giving one pony car fan with the means the chance to score an amazing machine – potentially at a discount versus its original MSRP.
