Ford Mustang 2017 Chicago Auto Show Best of 2017

Mustang fans spent 2017 looking into the future and dreaming of beating Camaros.

As a year in the Mustang community, 2017 has been all about one thing, the year 2018. Or to be more specific, the release of the updated 2018 Ford Mustang. Our most popular stories this year involved info about what 2018 is bringing for our favorite pony car. From leaks and first looks, the 2018 Mustang takes up three spots in our top seven.

Of course, considering how fast the Mustang has been improving in the last decade, it makes sense that all of us rapid Mustang fans are excited about what’s coming next. Revised looks, more powerful motors, and even a new version of the iconic Bullitt had us drooling over our keyboards and smartphones. We also went a little crazy for some new Mustang vs Camaro news with Bob Lutz weighing in on the rivalry and Motor Trend lining up the GT350R against the Camaro ZL1.

You can end 2017 on a high note and prepare for all the greatness that could be coming in 2018 by checking out the top seven stories you guys loved on The Mustang Source below.

#1: 2018 Bullitt Mustang Leaked

The biggest story from 2017 was a leak of the 2018 Mustang Bullitt. In the seemingly unending list of iconic Mustangs, the Bullitt is one of those rarefied “best of the best” Mustangs. Steve McQueen, one of the greatest car chases of all time, and the achingly beautiful subtlety of its design has forever cemented the Bullitt in Mustang lore. The fact that a new version could be coming in 2018 was enough to drive this story straight to the top of our traffic charts.

#2: 2018 Mustang GT Window Sticker Leaked

Your Top 7 Mustang Stories On TMS for 2017

A new Mustang was coming. We all knew it and we all wanted one. But with a new design, more horsepower, and new technology and equipment, we all worried how much more it would cost. That’s why this leaked GT window sticker gobbled up so many views. With a GT350 rivaling price of $53,000 after options, it seems some of us had reason to be concerned.

#3: Bob Lutz Weighs in On Mustang and Camaro Battle

Your Top 7 Mustang Stories On TMS for 2017

You won’t find a more honest man in the automotive space than Bob Lutz. His bluntness cuts like a scalpel through the world of marketing and PR babble that dominates the auto news cycle. Of course as a former marine, and a ranking executive at GM, Ford, BMW, and Chrysler, we feel he’s earned the right to speak his mind. So when Bob sits up and says the new Mustang beats the new Camaro, it’s a massive win for Ford fans.

#4: 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby Super Snake

Your Top 7 Mustang Stories On TMS for 2017

Most of 2017 was focused on looking to the future, but that doesn’t mean 2017 was a bad year for Mustang. Quite the opposite, in fact. To celebrate 50 years of Mustang legacy, Shelby introduced a 50th Anniversary Super Snake. With a built 5.0 Coyote that starts at 670 horsepower and is available in tunes above 750 hp, this track ready monster serves as the perfect example of just how good the current Mustang chassis really is.

#5: This Mustang Trailer Crash Will Wreck You

After a few years of ridicule and shame from unfit driver’s crashing Mustangs at Cars and Coffee events, it is a bit refreshing to see only one Mustang crash story in our roundup this year. Sadly this crash, like most of them, was completely avoidable. When loading a sweet 1965 Mustang into a car hauler, for reasons we will never understand, the driver stands on the gas, loses traction, and the car comes right off the ramps into the side of the track. Shameful.

#6: Shelby Mustang GT350R Versus Chevy Camaro ZL1: Video

Two years after Ford unleashed the GT350R, Chevy finally got around to trying to compete and introduced the new ZL1 Camaro. With a huge advantage in horsepower, acceleration, top speed, and lap times, the Camaro ZL1 trounces the Mustang in the stats department. But as Ford and Mustang owners have always known, making a car little faster doesn’t always make it better. Make sure you watch that video again to laugh at Chevy losing. Again.

#7: Up Close With the 2018 Mustang in Chicago

Your Top 7 Mustang Stories On TMS for 2017

In a year filled with excitement for the updated S550, we wrap up our top seven with an in-person look at the new Mustang. Parked among a collection of 2017 models and a classic 1971 Mach 1, this gallery piece gave us the best look yet at how the Mustang has grown and improved over the decades.

Honorable Mention: John Wick’s ’69 Mustang Fastback Is Back

The list was just supposed to be a “Top Seven” but in honor of the eight cylinders tucked under the hood of our favorite muscle car, we wanted to bring you an honorable mention. With the release of John Wick 2, we received a gift of movie magic as Keanu Reeves again pilots his gorgeous 1969 Fastback in one of the best action movies of 2017. Plus it felt a little nice to start and end our list with Mustangs that were made famous by epic chase scenes.

We hope you enjoyed 2017 and we can’t wait to see what amazing news rises to the top when the calendar turns over in a few days.
