Big rivals always seem to bring out the best of people, or the worst – depending on the people involved.

That said, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that following the reveal of the new 2017 Camaro 1LE at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show, one of the top guns at Chevy would take a few stabs at the Shelby GT350.

After all, it is the probably one of the biggest battles brewing right now in the world of cars, which Camaro engineer Al Oppenheiser had no problem fueling at the Chicago show, as highlighted in a Car Buzz report.

“That’s obviously our intent (to beat the GT350),” said Oppenheiser. “I have the answer, but I’ll let the rest of you decide how we did. Our goal is to up the game with our competitor, just like they upped the game with the GT350. Everyone had to expect we would punch back. I will tell you this car is three seconds faster than the previous 1LE. Your readers can go out and make their own conclusions.”

But the chief engineer didn’t stop there, adding, “We’re plowing new ground with the V6 1LE, and for the SS 1LE, our initial target benchmark was the fifth-generation 1LE. But, obviously, Ford came out with their GT350 and we changed our sights. We’re not worried.”

Needless to say, we’ll be keeping a close eye on this ever-escalating duel.
