Mark your calendars! The wait for Ford’s coveted cobra may finally be over, Jan. 14.

When it comes to the forthcoming 2020 Shelby GT500, the proverbial cat is kind of already out of the bag. But Ford isn’t going to (officially) tip its hand just yet. We know this because we here at Mustang Source are coming to you live from the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Where the new Shelby GT500 isn’t. But what Ford did grace us with is an official release date for the car. And even a couple of scant details.

And it’s all right here, on this incredibly cool display. Which even has a proverbial cherry on top –  a gorgeous red 1967 Shelby GT500. Underneath the vintage Mustang lie a series of information cards, documenting the Shelby GT500 throughout its illustrious history. And an ominous date – January 14, 2019. Which astute readers will already recognize as the start date of the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Which is pretty much what we’ve believed all along. Ford tends to save all of its big time unveilings for Detroit. So even though we’ve already seen what we believe to be the 2020 Shelby GT500, there’s still reason to get excited for the final winter edition of that legendary event.

And in case you were wondering, there are a few loose details on Ford’s information card for the 2020 king of all Mustangs. It claims that the car is “loaded with race-proven Ford Performance technology” and a “supercharged V8 that delivers over 650 horsepower.”

Ford also notes that the new Shelby will be “the ultimate Mustang” and “the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever built.” Which means it’s going to have more than 650 horsepower.

Now the hard part – we just have to wait until January. But you can bet that more details and perhaps even better photos will pop up before that day rolls around. So stay tuned!
