2017 Ford Mustang GT AWD Conversion

This 2017 Ford Mustang GT has been under the knife for a year now, but it’s almost ready to make history.

The Ford Mustang has always been a front-engine, rear-wheel drive vehicle, and for good reason – that’s the configuration most muscle/pony car fans prefer. However, rumors of an all-wheel drive version of the iconic model have swirled for years, yet sadly for some, haven’t yet come to fruition. The benefits of AWD are obvious – adding two more drive wheels improves traction, which is great for both performance and less than savory weather conditions. And that’s precisely why Tim Roman of the YouTube channel No Production Value Garage has been working on converting his 2017 Ford Mustang GT to AWD for the better part of a year now.

As one might imagine, there’s a very good reason why we don’t see a bunch of all-wheel drive Mustang conversions out driving around – this type of job isn’t what one might call easy. However, as Roman recently explained to The Drive, he’s not exactly a newbie when it comes to this sort of thing, as he previously built himself a turbo 5.0 V8-powered Merkur XR4Ti that drives all four wheels, a car that also just so happened to rocket down the quarter-mile in a blazing 10.72 seconds.

Now, he’s turned his attention to this 2017 Ford Mustang GT, a car that’s just begging for some extra traction – especially since Roman plans on adding twin turbos to the mix. But first, he’s working on the AWD conversion, a process that he wasn’t even sure was possible when he bought the car back in 2019. The key was finding a front differential that would fit, and interestingly, the winner turned out to be one from a 1986-1995 Toyota Hilux.

From there, Roman had to modify a set of Mustang front spindles to handle a pair of axles, as well as a transfer case, which in this case is the same Borg Warner unit found in AWD Dodge Challenger models. The transmission piece was relatively easy, however – Roman landed on a Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual, which nicely bolted right up to the transfer case.

Currently, this amazing project is nearing completion, with mere months to go before Roman reaches the finish line. “It’s all good to go,” he said. “Now the spindles are done as of last week, and now I’m back working on the oil pan, the diff mount, and the CV axles…that gets us up to where we are now.” Needless to say, we’ll be keeping out eyes peeled for the full reveal, because we can’t wait to see just how this amazing project turns out.
