2023 Ford Mustang Dragster Crash

After seeing this incredible footage, it’s truly a miracle that the driver of this 2023 Ford Mustang walked away mostly unscathed.

The drag strip is a place that many of us are very familiar with – a strip of pavement that can either make our weekend epic or crush our souls, depending on how our cars, weather conditions, and other variables decide to act on that particular day. However, most of us either haven’t actually experienced the horror of crashing our cars at the track – and even fewer have suffered any sort of serious wreck. While testing his brand new 2023 Ford Mustang dragster at State Capital Raceway in Louisiana recently, Todd Spiers probably didn’t think that he would record some serious hangtime during a pass either, and yet, that’s precisely what happened.

Spiers gained notoriety for appearing on the show Street Outlaws: New Orleans, and was clearly quite proud of his brand new, purpose-built, 2023 Ford Mustang dragster, which was put together by the folks at Bad Habitz Fabrication in Picayune, Mississippi. Things apparently went well on his first test pass, and after making some tweaks, Spiers lined up to take another go – and that’s precisely when things went horribly, horribly wrong.

Spiers launched with no problem, hooking up and rocketing down the track in a fairly straight line. But then, air clearly got under the car and lifted the front end toward the sky, with things escalating quickly from there. The Mustang’s hood quickly detached itself from the car, while the Mustang caught some serious air before smashing back down to earth with a violent thud. The pony car proceeded to roll multiple times, which, as one might imagine, had everyone in attendance worried for Spiers’ safety.

Luckily, Spiers walked away with only minor injuries, after which Bad Habitz posted a little more info on what, exactly, went wrong. “We made a bad ass car, the car is fast as hell and light” the shop noted. “There was a huge headwind and Todd and I got after her a little hard on the back end and she took it plus some when the cold DA of -1375 hit them turbos she loved it a little too much….Todd did his job as a driver and had his foot clean off the throttle just wasn’t fast enough.”

Clearly, Spiers was lucky in this case, though the fact that he wasn’t seriously injured in this horrific looking crash is a testament to the car and the shop that built it, too. Now, Spiers can take the time to reflect on this incident and even get a good laugh in, as another video posted by Bad Habitz shows him receiving a scale model of an airplane – appropriate for somebody that spent more time airborne while behind the wheel than most of us – hopefully – ever will.
