YouTuber Installs Tesla-style Touchscreen in an S197 Mustang

ThatDudeinBlue’s modern touchscreen addition is a small but crucial update for the S197 interior.

As much as we love the S197 Mustang, the interior is looking a little dated these days. Even the 2011 to 2014 interiors looked like they were from the stone age the second the S550 was released.

Mustang YouTuber ThatDudeinBlue wants to update the interior of his S197 and give the S550 interior a run for its money. His first step is replacing the center stack, which he refers to as “a calculator, Texas Instruments-looking thing.”

He plans on replacing it with an Android-based, Tesla-style tablet by Phoenix. The first step is removing the shift knob, followed by disassembling the center console trim, which is held in place by fragile clips. This us where a set of plastic pry tools comes in handy, as it prevents damage and protects the surrounding trim.

Once everything is cleared out, hooking up the new harness isn’t that difficult. It can look daunting at first, though. ThatDudeinBlue accurately refers to it as “a mess of cables.” However, there is only one of each type of plug, so it’s easy enough to figure out.

Touch and Go

Once everything is plugged in, it’s a good idea to test everything before buttoning everything back up. Naturally, they test the audiovisual capabilities of the screen with a ThatDudeinBlue video. Once they verify that the climate control and radio work as intended, it’s time to finish installing the new Phoenix screen.

Using the touch screen for the first time is pretty incredible. Anyone who has ever purchased electronics can tell you that that isn’t even the best part. ThatDudeinBlue says, “Get ready for satisfaction” as he slowly pulls the protective plastic off of the screen. Oh yeah, that’s the stuff.

It’s all about personal preference, but if you’re into touch screens, this is a great upgrade. Personally, we think that having buttons makes it easier to make changes while driving without taking our eyes off of the road.

We have to admit, though, that the touchscreen has some neat features. Mirroring your cellphone and showing videos on-screen (while parked, of course) is very cool. If you’re looking to update your S197 interior, it doesn’t get much better than this upgrade.
