What Would You Do With a 428 Cobra Jet That Sat for 30 Years?
Dilemmas don’t come much better than this. To restore, or dust-off and drive a 428 Cobra Jet time capsule?
This one’s for the classic muscle fans. Imagine stumbling across a mint-condition 1969 Cobra Jet Mustang. Mostly original, you discover the car was a driver back in the day, having covered about 41,000 miles. Once it reached that mark, however, it got parked in the mid-eighties, and has accumulated dust ever since.
The new owner of this car, Tommy Higgins, has decided to take a preservation route. Components that had aged during its first stint on the road have been replaced, but they stay true to the original style of the car. Otherwise, Higgins is going into full preservation mode.

This particular 428 Jet example is almost a time capsule, with a few unique items that have gone un-touched since it rolled off the dealer’s lot. The original spare, jack, and even instruction card for the jack are all present, along with extremely rare headlight aiming rings. While it may have been a driver, it still has some unique touches to make it a truly special 428 Cobra Jet.
It’s not our car, but still, we think preservation isn’t a good route to take with a car like this. Mileage has already been accumulated, and it has a few flaws here and there, so why not take it on the road?
