5 Mustangs That Need to Make a Comeback
These five Mustangs are part of the pony car's history, but we think it's time they made a comeback.
1. SVT Cobra/Cobra R
For much of the 1990's and into the 2000's, the name Cobra struck fear into the hearts of vehicular competition. The snake emblem meant that you were driving the ultimate Mustang, one that was plenty capable both in a straight line and around the bends. We'd love to see the Cobra make a comeback in any iteration, but we'd prefer to see a rebirth of the supercharged Terminators of 2003-2004. And most definitely a naturally aspirated, lightweight track version like the Cobra R.
2. GT500 KR
The GT500 is (allegedly) making a comeback in the next year or two, so that has us hopeful that we'll also see another "King of the Road" ultimate version. Considering the fact that the 2008-2009 GT500 KR made 540 horsepower and the new GT500 is rumored to have at least 650 hp, it'll have to be a beast. But Ford could easily coax some ridiculous numbers out of one and build a Demon/Hellcat destroyer. After all, why let Dodge owners have all the fun?
3. Mach 1
We're suckers for the Mach 1's styling quirks, no matter which generation you're talking about. The package has looked great on every Mustang it's ever been on, including later models. Of course, if we had our pick, we'd go with the 1969-1970 Mach 1's as inspiration, and offer two engine options like they did in that era. One with a bit more power than the base Mustang, the other with a snarling, torquey beast of an engine like the old 428 Cobra Jet.
4. Boss 302
Asking for a new Boss probably seems a little silly right now, because the GT350 is basically the same thing. Both are lightweight, high revving, track monsters like the original. But there's just something magical about the Boss nameplate, and those styling cues are instantly recognizable by anyone who knows anything about cars. It took us over 40 years to see a new Boss after the original bowed, but we doubt it will be that long before we see another.
5. Bullitt
When the Bullitt package came back in 2001, it seemed like it would be around forever. That iconic combination of clean body lines, green paint, and blacked out trim, inspired by the iconic movie, just never goes out of style. A slight bump in power and timeless five spoke wheels doesn't hurt, either. And you have to admit, the new Mustang body style would look fantastic with those touches.
