Watch the IIHS Destroy a 2016 Ford Mustang Over and Over
Somehow the S550 even looks fantastic when it’s getting its guts bashed in by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The IIHS recently had a 2016 Ford Mustang in its shop for testing, and they did everybody the favor of recording one of the hits — the side impact crash. As you can see, the new Mustang takes the 31-mph crash well. The main structure stays in tact, and the report shows that the the side-impact air bag completely blocked the passenger’s head from hitting any hard points. Overall, the evaluation was “good” for side-impact, and it scored well in other tests too.
But still, the Mustang didn’t earn a complete Top Safety Pick. It scored “acceptable” on the small overlap crash performance instead of “good,” leaving it one point away from the coveted status.

Interestingly enough, as you can see in the video below, none of the major muscle cars scored Top Safety status…
