Super Rare Mustang Cobra Jet Test Mule Owned by Former Ford Racing Head Is for Sale
One of just four finished in silver, this 2010 Mustang Cobra Jet test mule is currently owned by Brian Wolfe himself.
One could argue that any Mustang Cobra Jet is a special machine, for a number of reasons – obviously, Ford hasn’t built many of its track-focused, non-street legal, drag racing machines over the years, for starters. But this particular 2010 Mustang Cobra Jet is even more special than the average such machine, as it served as a test mule and product fit confirmation model for some time before it was later purchased by former Ford Racing head Brian Wolfe. Now, this special racer is up for sale yet again, according to Ford Muscle.
One of just four 2010 Mustang Cobra Jet mules painted silver, this particular car is undoubtedly rare and special, given its history. In terms of powerplants, it’s sporting a Windsor-based, 428 cubic-inch Stocker engine that was recently refreshed by the folks at Holbrook Racing Engines, and Wolfe is asking a mere $64,000 for it – which seems pretty reasonable, honestly.
As most are aware by now, the modern-day Mustang Cobra Jet came about following the debut of the FR500C Mustang at the 2005 SEMA Show, where the enthusiastic reaction from an eager crowd had FoMoCo wondering – what if we brought back the days when someone could buy a drag racing-focused Blue Oval model straight from the automaker, one that would compete in NHRA Stock or Super Stock racing?
Early on, the automaker considered a variety of engines for this new machine, ranging from the 5.0-liter “Cammer” V8 to the 5.4-liter unit in development for the Shelby GT500 at that time, and wound up settling on the latter unit for the first models. From there, it sourced a 9-inch rear end from Strange Engineering and adjustable dampers from the GT500 Handling Package, after which the 2008 Cobra Jet made its debut – alongside Wolfe himself – at the 2008 SEMA Show.
The rest, as they say, is history, and the Cobra Jet immediately became a success on the track and in terms of sales. To this day, you won’t find any pony car fan that doesn’t dream of owning one of these dedicated machines, and now, someone has the chance to pick up one of the more special examples that’s ever emerged from Ford.
