Though this 428 Cobra Jet Mustang doesn’t put down massive numbers by modern standards, it sings the sweet song of Ford engine history.

Modern engines, fuel injection, and tuning have certainly given us a jaded look at horsepower figures. Anymore, if a car doesn’t roll off the factory floor without 500 horsepower, people tend to look down on it in the performance world. However, it seems people forget how big horsepower now compares to back then. To bring the comparison plainly into the light, this 1967 Mustang GT with a 428 Cobra Jet makes a perfect example.

The video of this gorgeous ’67 recently hit the Late Model Restoration Youtube channel. Host Landan Durham gives a breakdown of the car and its features before they give it a solid go on the dyno to see what this old big block can do.

Extensive Modifications to This Beautiful ’67 Mustang GT

The owner, Scott Hubbard, purchased this car in 1979 and has been restoring it ever since.

“It now has a 428 cubic-inch engine. It’s been bored 30 over, Edelbrock aluminum heads, a Ford medium-riser PI (police interceptor) aluminum intake manifold, Holley four-barrel, and atop the Holley four-barrel, it’s been fitted with a ’69 shaker hood scoop,” says  Durham.

Additionally, the Mustang has original 428 headers with a straight-pipe exhaust to a set of custom mufflers. The exhaust routes through the original tips that Ford installed on the car when it was new.

“The four-speed has been switched out as well in favor of a later model T45 five-speed transmission,” says Durham.

The Mustang also retains its original nine-inch rear end with a Positraction differential. The transmission upgrade makes the fourth gear the one-to-one ratio gear. So, Durham puts the Mustang in fourth gear for the dyno runs.

Throughout these pulls on the dyno, we get a fantastic look into the past. Sure, it’s not the most powerful Mustang out there. However, it’s hard not to love the sound of a roaring 428. This is especially true when it’s running through an exhaust system that lets it breathe. Though this system does have mufflers, it’s anything but quiet!

“This thing’s definitely potent down low in the torque department. It made 265 horsepower at 4,600 RPM and 371 pound-feet of torque at 2,900 RPM,” says Durham.

So, while it’s not the most powerful Mustang out there, it’s definitely a show stopper. Think about it. If you saw this Mustang cruising down the street, you wouldn’t immediately start wondering how much power it makes in comparison to more modern cars, right? Instead, you’d appreciate its amazing condition for its age and the awesome sound it’s making. You’d probably even be reaching for your phone to grab a picture!
