S550 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Breezes to 170 MPH on Germany’s Autobahn

S550 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Autobahn

The Ford Mustang Mach 1 may be gone (for a while, at least), but it’s still a capable performance machine.

Though many are obviously excited about the arrival of the brand new S650 2024 Ford Mustang, there’s still a lot to like – and miss – about the S550-gen model. That includes, of course, the fact that we have to say goodbye (at least temporarily) to the Ford Mustang Mach 1 and Shelby GT500, both of which are excellent performance machines in their own right. The Ford Mustang Mach 1, in particular, was a nice gap filler in the lineup with some track-focused goodies and a little extra power. All of which helps make it rather fast when the YouTube channel AutoTopNL took one out for a spin on Germany’s famous Autobahn recently.

The folks behind this particular channel routinely do precisely this on a regular basis in all sorts of cars, but to be fair, most of them are not American. But every once in a while we get treated to something extra cool like this, and truthfully, there’s just nothing better than hearing the Mustang’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8 stretch its legs on the way to a high speed jaunt.

Even better, this particular example is equipped with the Tremec six-speed manual and not the 10-speed automatic, which hurts acceleration a touch, but then again, it also makes it more fun to drive, in our humble opinion. It’s mated to the naturally-aspirated powerplant of choice for the Mustang for quite a few years now, which in this guise produces either a cool 470 or 480 horsepower and 410 or 420 pound-feet of torque, depending on which model year it is. That much is unclear in the video, so that little tidbit is worth pointing out.

Either way, it’s clear the S550-gen Ford Mustang Mach 1 has some long legs here, as it manages to reach 278 kilometers-per-hour, or 173 miles-per-hour. That’s a truly impressive number for this particular model, in general, especially when we consider that it’s factory-rated to hit 167 mph. We’ve seen this before, and it’s usually an indication that a car is actually a bit underrated – a nice little bonus for folks that own one of these cool but now-discontinued pony car variants.
