Stunning GT500KRs Take Home Three Awards at Shelby National Convention
If you wanted to rewind to 1968 and drive a fresh GT500KR off the lot from your local dealership, you’re a bit out of luck. Time machines are not only non-existent, but I’d presume quite expensive to build. Tim Lea Restorations, however, gives you at least a small glimpse back into 1968, especially with a pair of recently finished GT500KR convertibles.
A “Special Yellow” convertible and triple-black convertible were the cars shown recently at the Mid America Ford & Shelby Nationals, and the pair of cars so far have earned Tim Lea a combined three Concours Gold awards. Being a concours judge himself, as well as an expert on 1965-1970 models, Tim Lea restored these convertibles to a truly “showroom quality” level. Both Mustangs received an extensive restoration, being built in exactly the same manner as Shelby did. And when possible, he even used the same original tooling.
The “Special Yellow” 1968 GT500KR shown above is owned by Rae and Ted Segerstrom. The low-mileage car was last running in 1976, but received a restoration which took well over a year. Segerstrom’s car won a Gold medal at Mid America Ford & Shelby Nationals. The triple-black GT500KR shown in the gallery below is owned by Bob Cassling, and received a similar restoration. That car won Gold at the Mid America show as well, plus a Gold at the Shelby American Automobile Club’s 2016 National Convention.
Tim Lea’s restorations are magnets for trophies and awards; to find out more, visit his website here.
