Record Setting EcoBoost Mustang: 10-Second Pass!
It is such a strange sensation listening to these things as they go down the strip, as we’ve become accustomed to the V8 bellow that had previously been tied to only the fastest of Mustangs. Well, now the EcoBoost Mustang is putting down 10-second passes. Sure we see faster times out of engines with twice the cylinders, but 10s are still mighty fast, and all the more impressive from Ford’s little turbo 4-banger. Now we aren’t saying this thing is an unstoppable powerhouse, or a wave of the future. Just that in terms of plain-old acceleration, it’s not too shabby.
The Mustang here reportedly makes about 500 horsepower when the boost is nudged up to 30 PSI. That’s accomplished by a 55mm turbocharger provided by Precision Turbo, which is mated to a CPE manifold. Other than a few other additional power goodies, such as an intercooler and a cold-air intake, the rest of the car (including a good majority of the drive-line) is impressively stock or available from Ford Performance Racing Parts. If you think back a few years, getting an extra 200 or so horsepower out of a 2.3 liter engine was improbable, if not wildly expensive. Now it can be done in what seems like an evening and a few hundred bucks worth of parts.
