THROWBACK: 1994 Mustang GT vs. Camaro Z-28

1994

Pony car wars between the Camaro and the Mustang have always happened (apart from that time when the Camaro needed a break). In honor of such, for today’s hot Throwback Thursday action, we take a look back to 1994 and MotorWeek‘s Retro Review, which really puts into perspective just how much things have changed.

Back then, the Mustang was still a 5.0, but not of the Coyote variety; and the Z-28 was poised as a GT combatant, rather than the stripped-out version we currently know. That said, in 1994 it looks like the Camaro did have a few edges here and there, but it’s still a close race.

What’s great to think of is how far things have come in those 22 years. Especially in base price, quality, and performance. That all comes at a price though; in the video, both of them have starting prices well under $20,000. Try and find a stripped-out sub-compact for that much these days. But even more impressive is the performance, especially the 15.6 quarter mile time — a time that would be scoffed at by any current GT owner. It sure does make you thankful that the pony car wars are hotter than ever.
