Mustang Stares Down Mother Nature at RT66 Raceway in Illinois

By -

Grip was in short supply for No Prep Kings race, but one racer’s Procharged Cobra put those Hoosier tires to work anyway.

No Prep Kings visited the RT66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois September 7 to 8 and it showed just how much luck is involved with a solid eighth-mile pass. The climate was far from ideal for making passes, with rain cancelling one days worth of events, and overcast and very cold temps throughout the remainder of the weekend. It all made for tricky conditions, which only added to the challenge of no prep racing.

Kayla Morton was one of the racers present. Widely known as the fastest woman out of Tulsa, Oklahoma, she was one to watch. Racing a Procharged Mustang, she experienced first hand the luck of the draw, with good luck going to anyone in the right lane.

Morton started in the right lane for her initial runs on track, and that proved to be a very good thing. A competitor in a supercharged Camaro was in the left lane, and lost traction almost immediately, forcing him to back out, and handing Morton the win.

Luck ran out for Morton on the second round, as she was in the left lane this time. Wheel spin didn’t happen right away, and it actually appeared as though she had the win in hand. Traction losses half way into the run forced her to back off and gave the win to a competitor in a twin turbo Nova.

It was pretty evident at this point that there were two completely different levels of traction on the right and left lanes. However, the racing continued, and that’s what makes no prep racing interesting. You can’t really blame it on RT66 Raceway, or the cars, or the drivers either, because most of that blame goes to Mother Nature.
