Mustangs Beyond Repair Come Back to Life as Watches

By -

REC Watches allows Mustang lovers to wear their pony cars at all times, telling a story that would otherwise have rusted away.

Mustang enthusiasts know that there are one-million-and-one products with the iconic pony stamped on them, hoping to make their way into garages, offices, and living rooms across the country with the hopes of professing their love affair. Decorative towels, check. Wall clocks, check. Colognes, check. Heck, there are even teddy bears and swimming trunks with Ford Mustang licensing on them. And while there are already a few Mustang watches out there, none of them are actually Mustang watches.

REC Watches was founded by Christian Mygh and Jonathan Kamstrup, who together scavenge junkyards across the world in the search for Mustang sheet metal. As this video by Ford Europe shows, the duo creates horological art with their creations, but more importantly, they tell a story to pass down to the timepieces’ future owners.

After removing a worthy piece of metal from the body panel of a beyond-repair Mustang, they proceed to research the car’s history. Often they’re able to piece together a specific story about the car, something which makes it even more special than any other licensed timepiece currently for sale. Whether it’s about its previous owner, its origin, or how it lived its productive life, there’s always a story for every VIN.

“Most people would just see a pile of metal, a ghost of a Mustang. We see something completely different–the soul of a car and a story that needs to be told,” says co-founder Mygh. “I’m not cutting up Mustangs. I’m bringing Mustangs that are beyond repair back to life as a watch.”

Like the Mustangs they are made from, REC Watches aren’t cheap, starting at around $1,495. Of course, it’s the love and passion for Mustangs and handcrafting that makes them so original, and so pricey as well. If your grandpa’s Mustang is already beyond repair but you can’t seem to part ways with it, perhaps wearing it on your wrist for the rest of your life would be pretty honorable in the eyes of the old man.
