Let’s take a look at the new Mustangs on display until April 23 at the Javits Center in New York.

Ford announced in January that the 2018 Ford Mustang would receive a mid-cycle refresh, which will change the engine options and also update many aspects of the pony car’s performance. And lucky you, we caught up with these 2018 Mustangs on the floor of the New York International Auto Show.

Chief among the changes for 2018 is the deletion of the 3.7-liter V6 as the base engine, moving instead to the 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder as the entry-level engine, along with the 5.0-liter V8 in the Mustang GT. The 2018 Mustang GT is garnering ample attention on the show floor, not just for the revised look, but also for the sharp new Fury Orange color. It looks stellar, and will stand out in the typical parking lot full of beige and grey snooze-mobiles.

The furrowed eyebrows of the LED headlight housings add to the aggressive-but-sleek look of the revised Mustang’s front end. The rear lights also get the LED treatment, and all 2018 Mustangs will come with either dual (four-cylinder) or quad (V8) exhaust tips tucked under the rear bumper.

More importantly, the 5.0 has been slightly revamped with twice as many injectors (16), larger valves, and 12:1 compression, which is a bump up from 11:1. That should mean more horsepower and torque, though Ford hasn’t released those figures yet.

The show floor also includes a 2018 convertible with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine. New for 2018 will be a 10-speed automatic transmission, which was designed in cooperation with General Motors. We’ve already seen the new Camaro and the new Raptor with this gearbox.

The new EcoBoost Mustang will also feature revised shocks, a new stabilizer bar, and an axis joint in the rear suspension for better handling. The MagneRide dampers from the Shelby GT350 will be available on all Mustangs as part of the Mustang Performance Package.

Speaking of the GT350, Ford has one of those in New York, too. The previous Shelby clearly helped shape the 2018 Mustang with its leaner, aggressive look. This GT350 sports an even-more purposeful front fascia that includes multiple aerodynamic elements and the GT’s same furrowed headlight “brow.” The Shelby will retain the 5.2-liter V8 with a flat-plane crankshaft. And rumors have swirled that the Shelby may make available the same seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission from the Ford GT.
