We don’t condone breaking the law at all, but let’s admit it, this was actually kind of cool.

For the most part, we love showing off our Mustangs at every opportunity. Spend the afternoon washing, polishing, and waxing, then spend the evening cruising the strip and enjoying attention from awed bystanders. However, one Colorado Mustang owner will likely want to lay low for a while.

On the morning of March 30, Colorado State Police observed a motorist in an older Mustang approaching speeds of 140 miles per hour on a stretch of Interstate 70 outside of Glenwood Springs. According to the Denver Post, the driver of the mystery Mustang actually sped up when state troopers gave chase, reaching 150 miles per hour.

Police weren’t able to get a clear view of the driver’s license plate before backing down and calling off the chase. On that part of Interstate 70, the speed limit often drops to account for various twists and turns through the mountains. Those treacherous curves could have caused trouble for the driver, the police, or both.

The driver of the Mustang isn’t the first person to run from the police in that area. A certain “Kowalski” also sped through that area in the cult classic car-chase movie Vanishing Point. Of course, he was behind the wheel of a white Challenger, not a “dark-colored, older-model” Mustang, which is how the police described the vehicle.

It’s not often that the police choose to call off a chase, but when they feel that it will put lives in danger, they make the difficult choice to pack it in. While almost everyone knows someone who claims that a friend of a friend made a hasty getaway on a liter bike, it’s not often that you hear about it happening in a car.

Hopefully, the incident taught the driver a valuable lesson and scared the living daylights out of him or her. If not, they’re likely to make the same mistake again…and we’re sure that the Colorado Highway Patrol will be waiting with open arms.
