Mid ’90s Just Called — They Want Their Ford GT90 Back

Ford GT90

Ford GT90 has a V12 with four turbochargers. It also looks like something from the future, but actually it is from the last century.

If we told you that you are looking at the 2025 Ford GT90 concept car, you would probably believe us. However, this car was actually revealed at the Detroit Auto Show back in 1995. Concept cars can be pretty outrageous, and this one was no exception. When it was rolled out it was the fastest and most powerful car in the world. The massive 6.0L V12 made 720 horsepower with the help of four turbochargers. To put that in perspective the 1995 Ford Mustang GT pumped out only 215 ponies. So, the GT90 was a massive leap ahead in the power department. It also claimed a 0 to 60 time of 3.1 seconds and a ludicrous 253 mph top speed. Those are numbers unheard of during the Clinton administration.

The inspiration for this concept was the iconic GT40. The GT90 was to be a celebration of the classic race car. You won’t spot the GT90 at your local cars and coffee. But our sister site 6SpeedOnline recently shared some pictures that photographer Zach Brehl has taken. Brehl posted the photos to his Instagram account for us all to enjoy.

Ford GT90 – A Jaguar in Disguise?

Don’t forget back in 1995 Ford owned Jaguar. Ford was looking to move upmarket with brand such as Jaguar and Aston Martin. The plan was not a winner for Ford. However, it did mean that for a time it had access to some juicy Jaguar bits. The juiciest Jag of them all was the XJ220. Ford built the GT90 on a modified XJ200 chassis. It also took the gearbox from the Jaguar and a few other bits.

What it didn’t take from the Jag was its looks. The XJ220 is sleek but looks like a car built in 1992. The GT90 looks advanced and edgy despite its age. Before he became a farmer Jeremy Clarkson used to drive cars for a living. He got to drive the GT90 back in 1995 at Le Mans. Even without the turbos hooked up to provide extra power he was impressed. “Americas first attempt at a supercar. And they have pulled it off.” Said Clarkson.

So Where Can I Buy One?

Sadly, you can’t. Ford pulled the plug and never actually built the car. The GT90 was a one-off concept and even if you want this one you can’t buy it. Back in 2009 it was headed to auction in Arizona. Unfortunately, just before the event, the car was pulled and never crossed the block. You would then that the car currently resides in a museum. And you would be right. But probably not the museum you would think. It lives at the Hajek Motorsports Museum in Ames, Oklahoma. So, if you want to see the car, that is where you must go. But don’t forget to call ahead first because they are open by appointment only. A phone call is a small price to pay to see what is one of the most interesting Ford concept cars ever created.
