Rumor Has it that Mach 1 May Make a Triumphant Return in 2021
Iconic Mach 1 name has not been put on a Mustang since 2004, but sources at CJ Pony Parts say its rebound is right around the corner.
While Mustang news hasn’t been the most exciting for hardcore fans as of late, there is a fantastic rumor afoot. We’ll give you a hint: It has nothing to do with an SUV or electric motors. Instead, it seems Ford is planning a stepping stone between the GT and the Shelby GT350 and GT500. While this already exists in the Bullitt Mustang for 2020, that is said to be going out to be replaced by this new middle-ground Mustang.
According to a new video from CJ Pony Parts, (which surfaced last on YouTube and was since pulled on Dec. 4) the legendary Mach 1 name is set to make a return for the 2021 model year. In a recent video, brand ambassador Bill Tumas discusses the ethics of using the Mustang name for the Mach-E electric SUV and touches base on what is currently known about the Mach 1 reboot.
“Coming in 2021, Ford is bringing back the Mach 1. We don’t have a ton of details yet, but we know it’s coming back. We know that it’s going to have more horsepower than that standard GT. And it’s going to get a real six-speed transmission. It’s also going to get a lot of parts from the GT350 and Performance Pack, which should make it an amazing, amazing performance car,” says Tumas
One has to wonder if this decision comes due to a lack of interest in the Bullitt Mustang. While it is a very cool car, it just doesn’t seem to have the cult following that it was initially expected to have. Sure, it’s got the classic Mustang heritage with its manual transmission and classic styling, but the Bullitt name doesn’t carry the same weight that the Mach 1 does.
Obviously, we are very excited at the prospect of a cheaper Mustang with a bit of GT350 lineage. The Shelby cars are amazing, but not exactly within the budget of the masses. If the Mach 1 fills the gap between the GT350 and GT as well as we think it could, we think Ford is looking at a winning formula here. One thing is for sure; we can’t wait to see it.
