MyColor Upgrade Journey
MyColor Upgrade Journey
Hello everyone!
I recently acquired my late Grandpa's 2007 GT and one of the first things I wanted to do was the MyColor upgrade. With the help from Kevin on this forum, both from reading his posts back when he first did this upgrade himself and talking to him on the phone, I was able to do this upgrade with no issues. This is not necessarily going to be a technical tutorial thread because I am not great at explaining those, but rather this will just be a quick overview of the process. I will have a video and pictures on my instagram, but I am not sure how self-promotion works here as far as if it's allowed, so if you are interested in that, PM me.
Alright, let's begin!
The mustang here is a 2007 GT and came from the factory with the deluxe interior package, not the premium, which means no MyColor feature. From reading and talking with Kevin, anyone attempting to do this upgrade must first check their wiring and make sure that they have the correct plug behind the dummy buttons that come in the deluxe package. Without that plug, you're going to have a heck of a time trying to do this upgrade. To check this you just need to undo a few things to pull the center console panel forward and see if there is a plug connected to the dummy buttons. If you do, then you're in business and you move on to the next step of finding the necessary parts....the center console panel buttons and the gauge cluster.
Finding the buttons for center console panel is extremely difficult nowadays as they are no longer produced. You either need to get in touch with Kevin who still has a few used ones or source one from the junkyard. In my case, I was able to snag one from a wrecked out 2007 mustang in California and it worked perfectly.
Finding the gauge cluster is pretty easy, but it is important to read the threads here about the compatability between the different years. Again, this has all been laid out by Kevin as far as which years work with no hiccups and what issues you could run into when swapping clusters in from a different year car. In my case, Kevin was kind enough to direct me to a 2008 Bullitt gauge cluster that would be plug and play with my 2007 GT.

Now that I had all of my parts, I was able to get started on the swap. Again, high level overview, it took all of 30 minutes to do and most of that time was me trying to fiugre out what size socket I needed lol! There's a total of 12 screws, two requiring a phillip's head and the other 10 requiring a 7mm socket, and some pulling on the plastic pieces. There are plenty of videos and explanations here detailing the step by step process if you want to see that. Like I said above, I will have a video on my instagram soon showing the timelapse of the swap and some pictures to show a few key points.
Viola! There you have it! At the end of the day, just follow the process that Kevin has laid out on the forum and ask questions if you need help. If you follow the process, it will go super smooth. I am also happy to answer any questions for the people like myself who are still doing this swap 17 years later whether you post here or PM me. I will probably direct you to Kevin's threads on this topic to be honest lol! I will edit this post later with some pictures or add them below, but I'm at work right now and wanted to take better pictures than what I currently have.
