I was taking a pic of the g with a rainbow running through it but also caught that ghostly formation above it.

Its pretty rare for a deer to be in my yard. Thrills.

I'm looking at a canon t1i and was wondering if I should go with their 18to 55 and their 75 to 300mm lens or go with someone else's lenses and just get the body? Also should I just go with one lens like 18 to 200 or something else? Do they make a 18 to 300? I like lots of zoom. Is there another setup or model/manufacture where I can get the same quality for less? Thanks

I am not a fan of the kit lenses. The 18-55 IS is a decent lens. If you want a big zoom make sure it is an IS (image stabilized) lens or you are going to regret it. The way I have always looked at is most camera bodies can produce the same image, it all comes down to the glass you use. In the last year I have started to shift away from telephoto lenses and started collecting primes. You don't necessarily need to stick with just Canon lenses. I have a few Sigma lenses that I think are awesome.

I have the 18-55 lens and it sucks... for me anyways. When I got my 40D I was very dissapointed with it. I got the 18-55 kit lens and the 55-250 kit lens. After I took my first pics with it I had found my $200 point and shoot took better pics than my $1500 camera.

John convinced me it was the cheap lens, so I rented a Canon 28-300 lens and WOW, what a difference. Then again, it's a $2400 lens, so you get what you pay for.

Here are a few of the better pics I took with it. If you can afford a good lens, i'd say that is the way to go. Although some people do have good luck with the cheap lenses too.

Zoomed out...

Zoomed IN...

And the raffle I didn't win...

The recent Lunar Eclipse on the Winter Solstice. Cropped and resized. Hand held shot since I was having tripod issues.

Western Union used to put a date nail in telegraph poles when they put up a new one. This 1930 one I found when I pushed over an unused pole to get a glass insulator on the old Chicago & Alton line just east of Kansas City in Missouri.

I used to have a lot of insulators back when I was a kid. I think I had three of the four in the pic. The green one on the right is one I don't remember having.
