Our city always does their 4th of July celebration a week before the 4th of July...

Nice.

The wind was blowing pretty hard last night so it was almost impossible for me to get pictures of nice, round explosions. Everything looks like a flower. It made it harder to find the right exposure.

But, it was nice of them to shoot off fireworks to kick off my birthday like that.

I had the wind problem at the same location back in 2010. They light the fireworks off on the beach. The hotel is right on the beach so we can watch from the balcony. The wind blowing and shutter open makes things a bit shaky.

They are set off from the empty area at the top right.

A trip to the zoo today. I hate this camera, for a $400 point and shoot type, it takes lousy pics. Time for a new one soon.

The horns on these guys remind me of the horns you see on cars in Texas in the movies.

Baby Warthogs

Brazilian Tapir

De Brazza's Monkey

Feeding the deer

Baby giraffe has gotten big.

From the skyride. It was about 90º and humid. One of them was keeping cool.

Sony DSC-HX30V

It had great reviews when I was looking. After I got it and saw what it took, I dug deeper and found lots of complaints about it.

Don't have any experience with Sony cameras. I have a Nikon S9100 for a point and shoot. Bought it three years ago. It didn't get the best reviews, but it's been really good for me. Has an 18x zoom and takes 1080p video. It's my go to for concert pics since they don't let you take SLRs. The video sound quality was good for it's time, but I've been thinking about getting something newer with better quality. That's way at the bottom of my list though. lol

Another one is on my hit list too. My previous Sony point and shoot took nice pics for its day, so I went for another. I've been looking at some new ones and might go mirrorless for the next one. I may have bought one already, but I spent my credit card points on a new tablet instead.

I highly recommend the Olympus PEN cameras. Mirrorless compact system cameras. They take very good pictures and have the added advantage of having an available adapter that allows you to use Canon 35mm DLSR lenses on it as well. Great if you want the ability to use a macro or big telephoto lens without having to buy another camera.

I haven't researched the Olympus ones yet but will check them out.

I have a Canon 40D which is a DSLR and that sucks as well. I think it's more the kit lenses I have with it since i've rented a $3K lens and got some really nice pics from it!

Those lens rentals are great. I had a Canon 5D MKII and rented some high end lenses. A lot cheaper than dropping a few $K on a lens you seldom use.

My favorite was a Canon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS. It weighed almost 4 pounds but it had me believing my 40D could take great pics. Cost me $150 for something like 10 days rental. It retails for about $2700.

Lens rental is a great way to test a lens before you buy it or if you need one for a special project.

Not really a new picture. In fact I took it almost 25 years ago, but I finally decided to scan some of my old photos.
