That is terrible. We've had this guy for almost six years now. He just showed up at our door (as do a lot of other cats that morons dump off when they decide they don't want them anymore) and he's been here ever since. The end of his tail is broken and he squeaks instead of meows but otherwise he's perfectly healthy.
