Ok, for clarity's sake, it's the .50 BMG (which stands for Browning Machine Gun, the Ma-Deuce, the M2 you see mounted on Hummers in movies), as in half-inch, not 50mm. It's metric equivalent is a 12.7mm round, something used in eastern european rifles and machine guns (think USSR). A 50mm round is about 2 inches wide. They shoot those out of cannons attached to trailers, guys.

Are they talking maximum range or maximum *effective* range? I can shoot a .50 BMG across a valley to a point five miles away if I really want to, but I doubt I'm going to hit what I aim at unless it's a pretty big area. Then again, I could throw a .50 caliber bullet at you and have the same force impact as a 9mm.

It's not the most expensive, believe it or not. You can get match-grade, hand-loaded .50 BMG rounds for upwards of $20/round, and that's not even the high end of custom loads. A lot of competition shooters sell their loading services to others and make a pretty penny off of it. You either have to have enough money to buy a Ferrari sitting in your bank account to afford some of them, or be a professional shooter who works with the loader personally. Most of them won't load for someone who will not allow access to the weapon they're loading for. It's pretty much essential to get the load as precise as necessary for competitions. Store-bought loads are not nearly so precise regardless what gun they're pushed out of, but some loads (the .30-.378 that I shoot with my Wby for example) are quite expensive on their own because of their rarity. The .30-.378 is considered (or was) a wildcat round and not a lot of people shoot it or buy the ammo. Thus the high price. I'm actually looking to sell mine specifically because of that. I can shoot a .338 Lapua for about half the price it costs me to take my Wby to the range.

It's just a matter of the right equipment (rifle/scope/caliber/load/etc) and some practice. These days you can take someone off the street and in a day have them hitting 1000 yd targets; the technology has come a long way since vietnam.
