I think the original black card had a process to get one. You had to spend like 250k on it for 3 years consecutive and the fees were 10k per year. That being said, if you flashed that card anywhere, you'd be put at the top of the line and could get a table at places that were sold out for 6 months.

You're correct. They used to send me offers for them years ago when I did a lot of business and it was prestige, but there's no way in hell I'm paying a fee to carry someone's card in my pocket. It was the exclusivity, to look like a baller when you whipped it out. They offer them to a lot of people now for a "small" fee. Small fee my ***, I'm not paying any fee. Hell, I could buy a house or a new Ferrari and a Jag with any card I have in my pocket now, and I don't pay a fee to keep any of them. Although the dealerships balk because of the fees. They bucked when I tried to put a Shelby on one of them because it was after hours and the banks were closed to approve a personal check.

Out of all my cards, Capital One is the only one that charges a yearly fee. I end up with them because they acquired other banks. Previously the cards didn't have a yearly fee at other banks.

I don't complain since it's only $39, and one of the cards sends me a lot of 0% offers. The other card is a recent acquisition with I just got billed for the fee. Time to cancel that one.

The reneged their "3.99% till paid off" when the crunch happened and switched me to variable. Regardless of my perfect pay history and "as agreed". I even wrote the CEO. They still would not honor their promise. Whereas 4 other cards did at that same time. **** Cap One and Laurence Fishburne. I'll never touch them again.
And paying a fee for any card in this competitive environment is not wise. It is a privilege for them to have us as a customer.

I get an offer in the mail for a General Motors Capital One card at least 2 times a month. First of all, I'm not paying a fee to keep a card, and second of all It'll be a cold day in hell before I carry around a Government Motors credit card in my pocket.

I got them for years also, so I finally returned one of their mailings with 'I'm a Ford fan' written on it. Never heard from them again! :-)

Awesome. I need to do that with the next one I get. Which will probably be next week.
