Need Help Figuring What the D2AE-CA Code Stands for on 1972 Mustang 351c Engine

So I've got a 1972 351C and I was hoping to get a little help with it. I was trying to figure out what code and what the "-CA" means. Somewhere I saw is designates the engine as a Cobra Jet but my block has 2 bolt mains. CJs had 4 bolt mains right?

also, any suggestions for a 5 speed manual transmission? I've been looking a a T5 but I'm unsure.

Thanks

forgot to mention that the trans I've been looking at came from a 1984 Mustang/Capri 5.0 V8. Not sure if that changes anything

So the more i look around the more confused i get. I want to say I have an "H" code block, but I'm still not sure. Is there any way to tell for sure?

Is there anyway I can tell if it is a 2V or a 4V block?

I also read that 351Cs are able to be machined to accept 4 bolt main caps. Would it be that easy to make a 351 Boss clone? or are there other steps I would have to take to make the conversion.

So many questions...

Any help would be greatly appreciated

'84 is NON-WC, '85 and up WC. Really you want a late '89 or '90 and later if getting a used one. I still would be nervous with the T5 behind the 351 and the torque it can make but it can be done.

some info on them for you,

The '84 is the non-world class T5, this T5 has the lowest torque rating of only 240 also all the main shaft gears, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ride on a solid output shaft with deep oil grooves to provide lubrication. All the synchronizer rings are made of solid bronze. These T5s also use straight 50W gear oil.

Starting in '85 Ford used the World class T5. 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear now had needle bearings, tapered bearings to replace the bronze thrust washer, synchro's where fiber lined steel rings (5th gear was still bronze), torque rating improved to 265

In '90 they added some upgrades. They went with the stronger 3.35 gear set by increasing the nickel content to produce a harder, stronger gear. 2nd and 3rd gear ratios were decreased slightly to provide more torque to the rear wheels. Synchro linings on 3rd & 4th were improved by changing from fiber linings to carbon fiber. The speedo drive gear was changed from 7 tooth to 8 tooth. Torque rating jumped to 300 .

Hope this helped you.

Thanks skunk21, I was worried about the engine shredding a T5 before but now I think I will just avoid that transmission all together.

I've actually looked at a couple of 6 speed transmissions just to broaden my search, and it looks like the T56 would stand up to the ft./lbs. that the 351 puts out. I'd appreciate any info anyone has on this one, or if they own one.

I'm in no rush to buy one seeing as I am still overhauling my engine but i would like to know as much as I can before a attempt to make a purchase.

Thanks in advance.

You have a number of options...
The WC T5 is an ok transmission and will handle moderate power.. 350 ft/lbs , if you want it just for the low rpm cruising and don't plan on beating on it than it's a fine choice. You could always have a used T5 built with the hardware required to beat on as well...
- The T56 is a very popular pro- touring transmission... The close ratios and double overdrive makes it a ton of fun... Depending on what your looking for they handle around 450 lb/ft to well over 800lb/ft... They are considerably more expensive though and more modifications are needed for the crossmember and tunnel...
- A great compromise between the two are the TKO500/TKO600... Another 5 speed trans with a selection of gear ratios suitable for either road racing or cruising and there are complete kits on the market... Pick up any hot rodding or classic performance mustang oriented magazines and you'll see them in everything! It would my personal choice... Hope this helps you

Does anyone know a good book that will help me ID my engine? I'm thinking about making some modifications but I want to know what I've got before I do anything

Thanks KC, the chart helped in that I definitely know that the -CA is for a Cobra Jet. My confusion comes from the fact that my engine has 2 bolt mains but is stamped with D2AE-CA. I suppose it could have been used in another car?

Either way that chart helped me make the decision to go ahead an machine the block to accept 4 bolt mains.
