the company that dad drives for bought 4 years supply of 07 model freighliners so they wouldnt have to deal with the updated emissions BS. He said that in as late as 2010, they were still unwrapping brand new 08 model year tractors and all because they knew the updated diesels won't get the mileage figures the old ones did.
I know several people in the dump truck business doing the same thing where they've sourced pre-2008 motors for their rigs

Nope, they are in the exhaust system similar to a cat converter, called a Diesel Particulate Filter or DPF. many trucks with these systems to not even truly have a muffler, the "filter" does most of that work too. Then to make it even more fun most 2010+ emissions trucks have DPF as well as use Diesel Exhaust Fluid or DEF. This is injected into the exhaust system and used to help eliminate emissions. Honestly it is all a real PITA for all of us "over the road" repairers. It will also make its way onto off-road diesels too, at some point every tom, **** and harry with a diesel Kubota or JD tractor will have these emissions systems.
