I know, right? We've got like 3 pages here

Gary, for my truck, getting it off the starter wouldn't be an issue. I got boatloads of space on the sides in that engine bay

I've been processing pretty well. Probably because I've jumped my truck 5 times in the past week...

The only thing I'm stretched thing for space on is right at the front, by the radiator. There's like none there. So the belt I may not be able to change myself... and the pulleys. I wonder if they made UDPs for it...

I honestly don't know. There is a positive wire connected to the starter. I wouldn't connect the negative to anywhere on the starter. It just doesn't serve any purpose that I know of.

On that starter there is a positive terminal and a negative terminal. The positive terminal leads back up the battery through what is hopefully a red wire. The negative just connects to the engine or engine block. At least on the ones I've seen. The surface of the starter is then negative. But I can't see any reason to put that negative cable on that starter. It's a little to close to the positive cable for my taste. I know that you don't want to hook that same negative cable to the outside of the alternator, so why would the starter be OK?

Don't do that either.

I think you could damage the regulator in the alternator doing that. Find something else. The case is negative too. But not a good choice IMHO. Lots of better places than that.

Hahah I just can't win! Does it matter that I always hook up the dead cables to the dead car before I hook to the car with power?

Alright, it's time for me to go to bed. My mom's probably gonna come wake me up at 7:30am, b1tch at me for needing to clean my room, then proceed to make me come grocery shopping with her... Sams Club doesn't do free samples that early in the day!

I can see why you would do that. But no. Other way around.

Just remember...positive good...positive bad...negative good...negative to something metal under the hood of bad. That's it. then reverse.

I found this just now...
Yes indeed regular Lead Acid batteries give of Oxygen and Hydrogen while being charged and this is a very explosive combination. The amount of gases generated is very small but there is still the possibility of an explosion if sparks are generated at or very near the battery. Most instructions caution to make connections to automotive batteries in a manner which prevents sparks at the battery. Example , when jump starting make connection to battery at positive terminal and make negative connection away from battery.
I've spent the majority of my working career employed as a mechanic and was typically the shop's electrician. I actually did have the top of a lead-acid car battery blow off on me once as I connected jumper cables but that was only one incident in close to 30 years in the trade.

A little story I found about welding with your car battery like I almost did...

Edit: If my father taught me one thing, its that you should remove your wedding band before doing any kind of real work. Working with table saws and miter saws all my life it just seemed smart. Working on cars I've had other cases where it makes sense too. It's a good and quick way to lose a finger.

Ok I was thinking about how to check a starter by pulling the positive cable off and all I could think about was that the starter needs power to turn over the engine so it wont work. Unless there is a short that will allow it to turn with the cable disconnected. Now you can check the starter by bypassing the solenoid and sending the juice straight to teh starter from the battery. I wrote more before but lost it when I had to refresh the page.

Yeah I have heard the battery exploding due to jumping a dead car. I always hook up the dead one first and then hook up to good one.

Yes I have seen it and it aint pretty. My auto mechanic teacher in high school actually melted his ring off his finger when he was working with electericity from the battery.
