Man it's boring in here tonight! What is new with you guys? Someone has to have something going on worth reading about! Or you can help me? I've been told and seen evidence that advancing my timing 2-4 degrees from stock will really wake up my engine, but my dad said this is bad for the engine. What's the verdict? Is it safe to do, or no?

I honestly don't know on the 300. I think you have to start putting premium in it if you go to 4 degrees.

Give it a shot. Do it little by little, and when it knocks a little when mashing the gas, retard a bit and you're done That woke up my GT as well as many other distributor type ignitions out there. On my old Sentra, it was a good "octane lie detector". It knocked a little with regular gasoline, so when I filled up with certain "premium" in one place and it acted up, I knew there was something going on. Haven't refueled in that place ever since (8 years now).

I don't have a timing light though. Is it possible to do without one?

What's a timing light?
If you mark the dizzy where it is now, and work from there, you'll be OK.

Good point, then I could just put it right back. Do I just twist the top of the distributor when the engine is running, or what? I'm a total noob

First you need to check on a Haynes manual for the correct procedure just to be sure. On my car for example, I have to unplug a jumper thingy near the fender well harness, a "spout" connector before messing with the timing, and the engine must be hot. But for moving the dizzy around, you need to loosen a screw that holds it in place just enough to move it. If you have room or if it's not too hot, grab it by the bottom, if not, by the cap then, but be careful if it has old spark plug wires or the cap itself since it can give you a little electrical shock. Ask my brother

Make sure you take one of the plug wires off and hold on to the tip of it while you do it.

From what I can recall stock timing is 10º advanced for a good tune. In racing applications they bump that up too 34º-40º advanced.

Oh sh*t, my antivirus software just popped up saying it found a "trojan horse" It recommends me to move it to chest, but there's also a note telling me that if I press "no action button" the malware will NOT be activated. What should I do?
