BRAIN F@RT...Curb damage

I zigged when I should have zagged. I try so hard to be careful. Maybe I'm too ****, but I swear that curb was further away.

Got a really nasty wheel rash today on my l/f Boss 302S wheel. It's ugly and I'm sick about it. No chunks are missing but the ridges are fairly deep.

Anything I can do? I'd like to at least figure a way to feather out the gouges until I'm ready to possibly leave it with a wheel restoration company, probably in the winter when the car is off the road. I'm sure if it can be repaired it'll need to be polished and clear coated again.

Any other suggestions?

Ouch! I hate that! I've come close a couple of times but so far no rash.

I don't know, but if you mess with it it might make it harder for a restoration company. Only thing I can think of is a smooth file but pretty tough with the tire on.

I was thinking about getting several grades of emery cloth and work it down from perhaps 80 to 600/800 grit or higher.

Or do you think I should just live with it until a pro can figure it out?

The hardest part will be parking at shows and hope that I can roll the car backwards enough so the damage is down at the bottom.

Tom!! No!! I'd just get one new wheel. Keep it as a full size spare.

I'm with laserred38. If this is about the shows then buy the new wheel now (chalk it up to "gotta pay to play"), and decide if your existing wheel is worth fixing and selling or not fixing and keeping as a spare.

Otherwise wait until winter and do your repair/replace economic analysis. Whatever you do, this isn't an emergency such that you need to try to fix it without the expertise.

Also you could always jack the car up when you get there and rotate the wheel to the least obvious position...

I'll probably be looking into a repair when the car disappears in the winter. If it's more than 70% the cost of a new one plus mount & balance, then I'll replace it. If the ugly can be made less noticible I'd try to deal with it.

I love the Boss wheels, but the wheels I really wanted were Shelby CS40's. They're only available in 20" though and I can't justify $2400+ for new rolling stock with only 2K miles on my car.

20's are in my future though, maybe even staggered.

Those are nice but they have got to be a real biscuit to clean.

If I got the time to wreck 'em, I've got the time to clean 'em.

My only consolation is that no one sees the damage when it's spinning @90mph.

Are those the black or charcoal 302 wheels? If it is charcoal, the eBay seller emustangparts has one for $289. Black ones are easy to get from Ford Racing.

Mine are black. I actually got a full set with TPMS from Levittown Ford Superstore for $728 plus $60 shipping....works out to less than $200 per wheel...best price by over $100 on the 'net.

Of course a single one will be more.

Maybe I'll trade it in on a '15....that's the one with the Fusion grille, right?

Sweet! What wheels ya gonna get for your 2 door Fusion? I'd go with the Boss 302S.

if they are cheap enough, buy a new wheel and get the spare fixed over the winter.
when i rashed mine, i found a repair shop to do it immediately for $95.

$289 doesn't sound too bad for your 302 wheel.

Try looking for a wheel repair company in the area. A buddy of mine with a 2013 GT did the same thing to his Brembo wheels, and a aluminum wheel repair company came out to his house and fixed it in about an hour. If the scratches aren't too deep they just polish them out with a dremel-like tool, than paint and seal. It worked out pretty good for him. You can only tell it was fixed if you knew where to look, and you had to look close.

The Brembo wheels are painted one solid color, much easier to repair and match. The Boss wheels are machined aluminum with a clearcoat - basically impossible to repair well.

"Mexican Chrome"

You can sand out a little of the rough area to smooth it down, mask the tire and nearby painted wheel surface, then hit that area using a spray can of silver. I know, I know...sounds stupid, But it can really reduce the eye sore until you get it fixed/replaced.

And, depending on the shows you go to, you still might score a trophy!
