Winter wheel/tire discussion
I have michelin x-ice2 on my car.
I can't remember where I have read this, but it was something about "regular" winter tires provide better traction than the "performance" snow tires, because the "performance" used slightly harder compound to provide better wear resistance.
I think tirerack has a whole article about this.

Gabe, just have everything shipped to the shop that is mounting the tires. That way you don't have to worry about fitting them in your car. You only have to get the four currently on your car home.

I'm almost 100% certain I'm gonna get a set of the Kumho Ecsta 4X KU22 tires in the stock 255/40R19 size ... they're rated as an " Ultra-high performance all season" tire, and I can get 4 of them, mounted/balanced, with free tire repair for life (via internal patches), for about $1030, and no sales tax since this is being done in New Hampshire
They're all-season, but have great reviews on Tire Rack, and look to have great tread design for dealing with snow/water.
Plus, I'll no longer be limited to not driving the Mustang just cause it's 32 degrees out, like this morning. Had to take the Focus and leave the Mustang at home even though the streets were bone dry

Edit 2 hrs later
: I just called in the order for a set of these ... I'll have them installed by Friday.

I did not want to put them on my stock 19" rims because the stock ones have less than 2500 miles on them. Put them away for the winter. I plan on doing a swap in the spring back to the stocks. Help keep them rotated and gives me time to put a nice wax coat on them as well.

just got a set of blizzak lm60s for mine mounted on whatever the cheapest 18" alloy tirerack sells, still 1800 with tpms and shipping. showed up today hopefully wait till after thanksgiving to put them on.
I finally broke down and just bought a set of 2013 take offs. I did some research and the F1 Supercar summer tires Im running now are considered highly dangerous and can even crack in freezing temps.
Yes, they are not the best looking take offs but they are ALL season. Plus if I curb them or get salt on them it's no biggie.

Well, my car's now riding on 255/40R19 Kumho Ecsta 4x KU22 all-season tires, the Pirelli's are for sale (only 4206.4 miles on them LOL)
So they are not snow/ice tires, but they'll allow me to drive the car on COLD winter days, and deal with light snow, something that would've been downright dangerous with the summer Pirelli's ...

I switched wheels and tires on my 2013 GT Vert this week from stock Brembo wheels to LMR Boss hyper black replica wheels, 19x9, and Cooper Zeon RS3 All season 255/40/19 and so far so good. Here is a pic, I too was leary of running the Goodyear F1 in the winter as we do get temps below freezing in my area.
I've run a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks (WS-50's) for about 7 winters now and they have been the most impressive tires I've ever owned (as far as doing what they're supposed to do). I haven't used any other winter tire so I can't say what is better, but I can say these were great on my 2003 V6 with no TCS. And FYI, 3 of those winters were in the Cleveland area with tons of lake effect snow.
Also of note I went a bit narrower than the stock tires (205 vs 225) and I think that helps cut through the snow a bit better.
So from experience I can highly recommend the Blizzaks.
