Hey all! Ive come across the (apparently) common problem with the master cylinder reservoir leaking at the cap and mid line seam. I wiped the tank, drove for about 50 miles, and it was just how it was when I started. Theres lots of forums about guys dropping the level or using Teflon tape to seal the cap. But those seem like Band-Aids for an otherwise serious issue. I dont wanna slap together some "maybe" fix and risk my paint.
Question is, does anyone know of/have experience with an aftermarket (preferably metal!) Tank? I want to fix it once and be done. I have yet to hear anywhere about a metal tank.
I Would First Try This As I Believe Some Have Merely Overfilled The Reservior And Some May Also Have A Worn Out Gasket in the Cap. The Fluid Mid Seam is Merely Where The Overflowed Fluid Had Dripped. Anyhoo it is Worth a Shot! Get a New Cap, Clean Well and Observe!
Also Some May Not Know When Installing New Pads & Compressing Calipers You Put Fluid Back into Reservior so if it Was Full When You Started The Brake Job You May get Spill over as Well!

I think you may be on to something there -- the reservoir definitely looks like it is filled up to the tippy-top and could have easily overflowed

Back in The Day When I Went Through Cars Like Ice Water I Had Plenty of Master Cylinders Where The Gasket Was Swelled Up at a Certain Point! Fill Master JUST BELOW Full Line Vs any bit Over! I think You Will Be Fine! That is After The New Cap!
Nothing Wrong With Getting a Brake Flush Either as Part of Maintenance! The Fluid Absorbs Water Over The Years! We Did These At The Dealership Quite a Bit!
It has 47.5k on odom. But I was scratching my head at the age thing. Maybe a decade of brake fluid sitting in a plastic container isnt a good idea?
Thanks...No I don't think the plastic container itself is an issue. I've had too many rides over the years and no issues with the plastic. My 23 year old Trans Am's plastic container is doing fine, as an example (85,000 miles). My '07 GT was fine too when I sold it 2 years ago (65,000 miles).
For what its worth I dropped the fluid level down to about 3/4 between min/max and did some spirited driving. No leaks! (Yet). Ill keep an eye on it and have a new cap on its way. Thanks again guys!
