Track wheels- 18" or 19"

For those of you who will have a dedicated set of track wheels, will you be running 18" or 19"?

What tires (brand/size/type) will you put on the wheels?

If you're talking real track wheels with real rubber on 'em then there's no question to ask..................

You get the smallest rim that will fit over the brake caliper, which is an 18".

The Boss 302R BBS wheel or an old Fikse FR500C rim or anything else that will hold a Hoosier R6 or BFG R1 or if you're budget conscious like me, a set of scuffed Grand Am Cup tires; Continental 275/35/18's.

The smallest diameter, lightest wheel with the largest contact patch and the least amount of unsprung rotating mass possible

Oh and damned the looks; performance is everything!

+1, its more about the tire composition and profile than wheel diameter. Watch NASCAR, they don't run wagon wheels with rubber bands on them.

I'm planning on ordering these BBS wheels for my second track set to go with the Enkei PF01s I already have. Are the BBS a direct bolt up for the Boss or do you have to change out the wheels studs, use spacers or different lugs?

Ask Blackbolt9 over on corner-carvers (also on svtperfomance). He works part time for Rehagen Racing. They are a distributor for these wheels as well as an end-user race team................. He should be able to answer.

I am curious too. I'd be next in line to buy a set for the track. I don't think my extra set of '07 GT500 rims would look so hot and I know they're a ton heavier

edit: his name is Tom

+3 for 18s.

Good luck finding 19" r-comps, anyways. And if you can, they're gonna be another $250/set minimum vs. 18s.

275/40/18 all the way around FTW. 35s if you want a little shorter effective gear ratio; 35s seem to slide a bit easier due to the shorter sidewall (less effective spring at the wheel).

Hey Jeff I emailed them a couple days ago. I'll post up when I hear back. Yea I've got an extra set of GT500 wheels too but at 29lbs a piece I may just use them to hold up my deck umbrellas.

Cool. Thanks to everybody for replies.

I should have mentioned before that I am not on a limitless budget. This is something that is more or less going to be a hobby, and I'll see limited track time.

At this point, I'm honestly considering picking up a cheap set of 18" 2010 GT500 wheels and putting R-comps on them. Yeah, they're not the lightest wheels in the world but they're cheap, they will fit over the brakes and they're fairly wide (9.5"). I'd also consider the Laguna Seca style wheel from FRPP (with black paint vice red), but I'm guessing those wheels will probably run $400+ each, and they are 19s.

Thanks, this is exactly the problem I was running into- I couldn't find a good tire selection in 19" on tirerack. It's good to know a size to have as a reference as well.

That's exactly the choice I made with my car. I could afford the wheels and tires I wanted, but I couldn't afford the rest of the suspension upgrades I wanted. I went with the SVT GT500 wheels and was able to buy Koni Sports, a Fays2 Watts Link, and Strano Adjustable Sways. I figured I'd rather have an entire car setup well than have the lighter wheels that I wanted to begin with. And, the autocross season doesn't start up again until February which means when my tax returns come back in March, I'll have the $ to get track only wheels/tires.

Those Roush wheels are legit, have a set myself (the painted ones from the TP) for track wheels.

I know you got a killer deal on those tires, you'll need to step up to a real r-comp after you burn those out, though. Can't rotate those KD's either :-/

For the price it was stupid not to. I could have got a set of R-comps, but it would have been triple (at least) what I paid for these tires to start.

You can't rotate the KD's? I know they're directional. You can still swap them front to back, right?

I need to clean them up tomorrow and put them away. Tires all have 95% tread or better on them.

I will sell you a set of 2007-9 GT500 wheels that are a little worn from track use. They will be cheap. Let me know if you're interested.
