Road & Track speculates 500 hp Boss

In the September Road Track on page 46 they write that "There is also a gap in the Mustang between the GT and GT500 that has us speculating that the Boss will soon make 500bhp." Has anyone heard rumors like this?

Kind of a bummer cause I just got a 2013, which I love, but more power is good. A real bummer cause I thought it was a two year run and that's all. Ford already diluted the Boss by offering many of the pieces a la carte on the GT. I like having something that was a limited run.

I don't see it. I think they've just about wrung all they can out of the 5.0 at 444 hp. Seems to me that any substantial additional gains would have to come from forced induction, and that adds undesired weight on the front end, which would not be good on a track car like the Boss.

The N/A 5.0L has more HP in it, but it will come from direct injection. And I suspect that that won't be in-play until the new platform debuts in MY2014, if that early.

Of course the rumors of a Boss 351 for next year run rampant............

I've also heard rumors/rumblings (admittedly not from what I'd call credible sources) of a non s/c'd variant of the Shelby's 5.8L going into an 'alleged' B351. Or it could be called a Mach1. Who knows.

Hmm might be time to stop investing money into the Boss and see if the 5.8 becomes reality.

I agree, I was thinking direction injection for the new model....I never really took the talk of 5.8 n/a seriously. From what I remember the GT500 is based on the old 5.4 and not the 5.0 that is in the GT and Boss.

you should not get bummed out heres a fact of life: things always get upgraded! with that said even if they did make a 500hp Boss, a simple blower or some nice bolt ons and tune will get you that number....I was also under the impression the Boss would not be around that long, remember model refresh coming in 2014 for the 2015 model year.

the 5.0 is a great engine and I dont doubt they will keep running with that in different variations.

Agreed! The rumblings have been rampant, but as I recall, many of us Boss owners had confirmation that the Boss was coming back by mid-2010. I think we even received an email from Ford sometime in April letting us know that the Boss was on the horizon. I had already talked to dealerships about securing my Boss by mid-August 2010 (although, as we all know, formal orders didn't start until late Nov.- early Dec.). My question is (for those out there with close connections to Ford): if Ford was going to reintroduce the Boss 351 (or for that matter, continue with the Boss 302), shouldn't we have heard about it by now ... officially? IMHO, I am not too confident that the Boss 351 will arrive (at least for 2014) because if it was, it likely would have been more prominently 'leaked' by now. Nor do I think Ford will continue the Boss 302 (2-year run, as promised) or we would have already heard about it. Our forums would already have threads asking 'when will the new ordering guides be available for the 2014 Boss?'

I also agree that if a Boss 351 does show up, it will be naturally aspirated. I am not confident that Ford will put a Boss badge on anything that uses bolt on 'air managers' to improve HP. That has always been left up to the Shelbys... If, indeed, it does come back, the re-introduction of the Boss 351 may be about timing, because the other major event that occurred with the arrival of the Boss 351 was the dramatic change in the Mustang body style for 1971. 2015 anyone?

As for the return of the Mach 1, that would be the perfect badge to bring on a larger displaced engine with lots of options to make power, and it wouldn't have to be a limited run. The perfect option for those who want more power but don't necessarily have the coin and/or desire to drive a Shelby. Mach 1s were mostly about engine options, deluxe interiors, creative stripes/badges, and of course, the optional shaker hood! - making a typical sportsroof Mustang a desirable collector (especially if it ended up being a 428 CJ or SCJ). But, as stated nicely above, "Who knows?"

During the design phases of the 5.0L, Direct Injection capability was one of the goals. However, it was left off of the production version. It would be relatively straightforward to add it for the next Gen.

And, although not cheap, a 500+ HP Roadrunner without DI is entirely feasible with off the shelf parts- Just use the Intake/throttle body combo from the new Cobra Jet with a streetable tune.

Since the Boss 302 is built for 2012 and 2013 only,
what will Ford do for 2014? before the release of the 2015 new body style

My 2012 Boss now at 402+ at rear wheels after CAI and tune. (roughly 470 gross)
so even IF Ford makes a 500hp n/a Boss, I'll pass...

BUT a 550-575 n/a Boss could be a game changer..but I would need to see the price.

The new platform arrives in calendar year 2014 as a MY2015 vehicle, by the way. You are correct that direct injection is on the way, though. It's just a matter of which model year Ford decides to introduce it on the 5.0L.

Atilla, I thought that the Boss 302 would carry on in 2014 despite the original indication of a two year run (like you noted above). However, now I'm starting to think that it really is just a two year run and will not return for 2014. I started a seperate thread about the 2014 Mustangs that you may find interesting. Read it here.

Wont be seeing that anytime soon, one of the reasons the GT500 now has 662hp is because som... err alot of people were really wondering why even have a GT500 when the Boss was handing the Shelby its *** (not to mention that the Shelby is the cash cow king).

The Boss might see 500hp but I'm thinking such a car would be there to stomp on the 1LE or ZL1 (since the Boss by magazine standards is nipping at the ZL1's heels on the track)

Not to mention with just a few mods like ,CAI, Exhaust, and some others tweaks are putting down 425 hp to rear wheels which is 460+ to the flywheel.

I'd be interested to see how they would do a Mach 1 on the new body style. IMO the shaker dosent look good on the s197. But if it did get the 5.8 n/a I'd sell my soul for that car.
