Just a Warning .......

for everyone to check your oil weekly. The topic was being discussed here

http://bossmustangsonline.com/boss-302-technical-forum/anyone-burning-oil/

and it seems some people were taking the new car thing for granted. Check the oil at least once a week. The Boss will burn oil !!!

Also if you are not running an oil separator, think about getting one

Strange, it seems like some burn and others don't. Mine has 700 miles of fairly spirited driving and is still all the way full. I check it each time I drive it after seeing some of the concerns similar to this.

It doesn't make sense to me though that the idiot light doesn't come on when an engine gets 2+ quarts low. Seems like a problem with the sending unit, computer to illuminate the light or something?

Yeah I'm with you on that. Couple of engines have been run way low and no indication on the dummy gauge or idiot light.

Exactly. So that certain idiots(aka myself) would know that "holy **** my car is going through a quart of oil every 750 miles". That would be nice to know right off the bat instead of taking the new car thing for granted. I would maybe understand it if I was taking my car to the track all the time, but it has never seen the track.

the idiot light has nothing to do with oil level...only pressure. Hence the idiot part of the light!! LOL My car used about 1.5 qts in the first 1500 miles. And since then i installed the JLT separator on the p/s side and I get about a tablespoon of oil in it very other fuel tank fill up.

But wouldn't you think the oil pressure would be low when the engine was 6 quarts low?

It was and that's why the Cam Positioning Sensor code was being thrown by the engine. But I agree, it should have thrown something in regards to low oil.

Scott is 100% correct check your oil. The Boss does come with a dip stick and it was designed to be used. By the time the oil pressure light comes on its to late.

Kind of funny that my 200 hp 86 GT has a full complement of gauges but my Boss has a temp and gas gauge. Really, my only complaint.

4500 miles and no oil usage. Car has not been on the track yet but gets driven in a spirited fashion

I would strongly recommend you change you oil soon. Changed mine at 1700 miles and it was nearly BLACK. Since the change it has stayed clear.

Interesting observation. With today' technology the lack of gauges doesn't bother me too much. The ECM can monitor and tack action much faster than the driver. On the track I'm looking for my exit point and next apex rather than the gauges.

Wow, this is not cool.

I have had all sorts of Mustangs...a Bullitt, a Mach 1, regular GT's, and so on. Not one of them ever used oil. I would have never expected this one to given my past Mustang history.

My buddy has a Terminator Cobra he has had since new, no oil use. My buddies new GT500 uses none. Nor does my buddies ZR1.

I honestly never gave it a thought on this car, I check my hot rods all the time, but not this car. It is my daily driver.

I just found out that at 3000 miles I am low.

Not impressed about this one bit.

I don't want hear comments about how it has a dip stick, I want to know why this car is using oil. Is it going by the rings or what? Do we have a "PT Cruiser" on our hands?

This car is not my 32 ford or my drag car, it is a new car that is supposed to the best Mustang ever and all it has is an idiot light that has not gone off.

You can't even check the oil on some cars in today's world and most people are not going to expect this.

Ford Customer Service is on here and they have been great in the past, but I want to hear from them on this one.

I have been holding off on taking mine into the dealer until I hit 3000 miles so I could get my free oil change, the tranny looked at, and to see what they can do about all the noise from my suspension and now I will be adding this to my list.

Merc, I can't answer the question but just add some for now. You will be fine doing that and waiting out the free oil change at the dealer.

BTW, I posted this as a waring nothing more. It was not meant to imply anyone is stupid not checking the oil more often. I happen to check things on this car because of tracking but have to admit I have not checked the tow vehicle as often as should be done. It's funny I check the tire pressures 10 times a day but checked the trailer a few weeks ago (after a long time) and found two tires 10 PSI low Now that this has been brought to light I wanted everyone to know to keep a closer eye on it, maybe throw a quart in the trunk since I doubt the local filling station has 5-50 on the shelf.

It's just oil. I think you're going a bit off the deep end.

All engines have their own personalities. Why do you think Top Fuel engines get rebuilt after each run instead of replacement? Any operator of a motor vehicle should check the oil each time they refuel. That used to be a service provided by the gas station in the olden days.

No I am not.

I found my car was very low, it was unexpected.

It is an issue that several people are having.

Oil consumption can get better with break in or become far worse over time.

I have every right to be concerned. What happens it this continues to get worse? I should just be okay with a quart every 1000 miles?

My full race 440 does not even do that under hard use.

I drove around with it low, most likely it did no damage but who can say.

I bet if your LS did this you would sing a different tune. What if it was your jeep doing it, that would be okay and you would have zero concern?

This is not the olden days, this is the era of idiot lights and milled motors with parts that fit better. Some cars you can't check the oil on today. This is not something anybody was warned about, these are not olden day cars. This is not the era of a breaking in a motor when it is new like they did in the 1950's. That light should have gone off on my car, there is no way it did not have a drop in pressure running that low on oil.

Top Fuel motors are a different breed.

Some of you guys talking, how many motors have you actually built?

Race motors for Bonnie are different than drag, those are different from road racing. Some are made with the rings and the pistons so lose they will shake in the motor when you are putting them together, others are precision perfection. Some burn oil past the rings, others never use a drop when built right.

I would have love to know up front to watch this car. I would have had no problem with that before hand, but to find out like this from a forum?

My experience was you could trust these motors, I got lazy based on that experience.

I check the oil every single time I even think my hot rods are going to move, I have not given a daily that kind of approach in 20 years or more because I did not have to.
